Understanding the moon's creation

I have always wondered why the scientific community has thought that the moon was involved in a collision with earth instead of normal accretion or acquiring the object from another orbit, say the Asteroid belt or the Kuiper belt. If someone would be kind enough to give me some basic pointers on this topic, or a reliable link, I would be grateful to you.
