At some point, we have to be careful of reaching a state of Absurd Reductionism.. or, where everything is excluded based on preference.

SDC, after all, can't exist on Telescope, Tech and Science Book ads alone.

I agree, though, that Adult ads and some of the more distasteful advertising has to go, especially ads that are persistent, intrusive or hamper the operation of the site by the user.

"Talking" ads would be on the top of my Kill List as well as any Pornographic ads and popups that can not be minimized.

I'm pretty lucky , where I work right now I'm the tech guy by default , I'm also the main programmer . For the most part I don't even notice the adds (I know where the information is that I want to read and everything else is ignored) , the thing I notice is I will be logged in and it still pops up a window (hard to ignore since I have to click the X to make it go away) asking me to join this community (seems odd since I am logged in) . But the adds are definatly based on area , I see adds for the SanDiego zoo among other local attractions , and lots of local dateable women wanting me to join their community  So far I haven't seen anything too bothersome .

I just get a little sign-up box that follows me around on the main page. After that, nothing.

Some ads will be localized based on your regional IP address. But, they're not always accurate. If you login remotely, for instance, then you might be in Denver while getting localized ads for Daytona, your hometown ISP.

I am going to merge the discussion of this particular type of ad into the discussion specifically justifiably complaining about it.

(Referring to the pop up ad on the bottome of the page) Please post followup comments there. Thanx, Wayne

Is it my imagination, or did we recently add another text ad area above the fold? Wow. 24" high resolution monitors, small text size, and I have to scroll for content...

In order to remain useful, I'm having to eliminate advertising now. At this rate; pretty soon there won't be any content, just advertising.

The political attack ad against Suzanne Kosmas running as a banner is inappropriate for this website. It is partisan, misleading, and insulting. Obviously the cancellation of the Shuttle program was initiated during the Bush Administration, Obama has proposed and increase int he NASA budget, and Kosmas accomplished the Herculean feat of actually getting a NASA authorization bill through Congress, which helped Constellation employees considerably. The purpose of the ad is to shift Congressional power, not to promote space.

But more important, this kind of deceptive, vicious, and anonymous political attack on either side makes it impossible to choose a meaningful path forward in space, and undermines the basic goal of this site and its many readers and contributors.

I respectfully recommend to the operators of this website, to which I have spent many hours contributing, that this ad be removed.

But, you won! Go ahead, claim your prize!

Looks legit to me...

:)

(That add is really popular, pushing everything from "free computers" to "free cell phones." Of course, it's garbage. )

Umm.... I'll let you two duke it out in our new THUNDERDOME forum. ;)

Seriously, though - I'll bring it to the attention of the appropriate person and relay your objections, Andrew. :)

No, at the time I had no idea what it was. Thought it was a social matching service, but Googling shows it to be some kind of marketing tool.
