These days on SDC I am bombarded by ads about 'scientology', 'December 21, 2012 (get ready)' or 'numerology' and even banners sporting 'sexy asian girls' :?

Not only is that weird stuff to find on a science-related website, but the corporate filter, my boss and my wife all find that less than amusing.

I have nothing against ads for telescopes, X-prize or even Patriot missiles. But the other nonsense is really disturbing.
OK, if you must, leave the girls  , but get rid of the rest. Please?

I agree that those ads are not appropriate. Next time you see them, can you notate the page's URL on which you see them, and also the link to the ad if possible. Thanks.

It's on every page and it's dynamic, you get a mix of whatever they send you. Now I'm at home and I get prophecy and wealthy folk to date. This afternoon at work it was teenage girls, scientology and 2012. Some of it is in the local language (I live in Flanders and get a mix of English and Dutch) so I guess it is customized to a certain degree.
What I did to get targeted by Scientology and the Prophets, I don't know. :? The girls, well...

Here is the link for 'Date the rich': http://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/aclk ... %3D16&nm=1
For 'Prepare to meet your God' I see the flash movie comes from 'pagead2.googlesyndication.com'

It is not illegal or something, just annoyingly 'out of sync' with the mostly serious matters presented on SDC ;)
Here is a quick PrntScrn of the current batch. I had to put the jpegs on a website because you can't upload on this forum. I will delete the files in a few days:

I KEEP GETTING THE ONES that say "Come join our bathhouse and have some fun".

But there are no girls in the pictures. :p

Thanks so much, orionrider. I'll pass this on to our product manager and ad people.

Whenever I let the ads through, to give some payback to SDC for having such a great community, all I ever get is dull, mundane stuff like people trying to sell me advanced weapon systems....

I guess I need to cruise the net for porn a bit more so I can "bake" some more interesting cookies.

I've noticed another very annoying ad twice, but was too busy to capture any details. It creates an oddly shaped window that appears superimposed over the text of the post I'm trying to read. Some kind of survey IIRC. If I have time, I'll try and get more details next time.

Again, apologies for any inappropriate ads. We've got the ad people calling the appropriate ad companies because we agree that those ads in the screenshots do not belong on SDC. Those screenshots were really helpful, so if anyone ever comes across ads they think are a problem, a screenshot would be an awesome addition to your post/email about it.

Here is today's batch. I also get more 'common' stuff, like astronomy software, online gaming, hotels, webshops and even Patriot missile systems!

Note that in Europe, the ads below are not considered rude, offending or inappropriate. However, they are rather unexpected on SDC. :?

No need to apologize. You are not responsible for Google's bad taste ;)

Belgium (the European country, not the cities in WV, IL or Wisconsin)...

As I said, I suspect Google to customize the ads based on the IP range, maybe even the ISP.
Americans would get ads for burgers, Palestinians for DIY rockets, Iranians for leftover Pu239 and Belgians for underage ladies.

None of these ads even compare in annoyingness to the strobe-ad banners which say "YOU ARE A WINNER". Fortunately, I haven't encountered a strobe ad in over a month. I am happy to say my eyes have recovered back to normal now, the stitches from the spoon gouge-marks have largely healed, and I don't even need to wear my strobe-proof sunglasses anymore while reading SDC.

I also have noticed these weird ads. They appear just below where the button for either "post a reply" or "post new topic" appears. I have nerver opened one so I am not aware of their content. Where I used to work if an employee opens a sex ad or site from his/her work computer he/she can be fired on the spot. The IT department monitors this at all times.

It's not really porn, more like dating and chat. And the stuff is stealthy, it appears as an image or a flash animation, so it goes through corporate filters and monitoring programs.

But then the boss comes in and you have to explain ;)
