As you can probably gather from the name of this forum, the purpose of this forum is to encourage discussion of basic, generally-recognized science and scientific concepts. This is not the appropriate forum for discussing fringe theories - please go to The Unexplained for that. If you have a question about science - be it space science, physical/earth science, or biological science (both flora and fauna) - please post it here and no doubt someone will have an answer for you. If you are a science newbie, this is an especially great place to ask your questions. Both teachers and students alike are encouraged to participate.

This forum is intended to be welcoming and open to all... but please be sure to discuss and not aggressively debate the issues. Thanks!

Hi dh. Great new forum!! I was wondering about the space science part you mention here. There is a forum call Space Science and Astronomy here. Will that be changed?

Nope, no existing forums will change. This forum is a place for any questions about science, including any about space science or astronomy. SS&A will remain as it is.

SS&A is likely to contain more advanced discussions than Science 101, too.

Thanks dh. Just wasn't sure it would cause confusion. Still a great add to a great site!!

You might want to start a Science 99 (Remedial) Forum around here!

Just kidding, D. Good idea.

Just direct them here:

That reminds me of Brian Regan's bit where he talks about his 7th Grade science project. He brings a cup of dirt, and the really smart kid has a homemade model of the Solar System. The smart kid keeps saying, "The big yellow one is the Sun!"

So the teacher asks Brian, "Brian, tell us about your project. What is it?"

Brian- "Um... it's a cup of dirt."

Teacher- "Can you elaborate for us Brian?"

Brian- "Well, it's a cup... with dirt in it."

Smart Kid- "The big yellow one is the Sun!"

How does this relate to the physics forum? Physics is science, so shouldn't physics be a sub-forum of this forum?

There are no plans to make Physics a subforum of Science 101.

Ah, an interesting addition to the boards. Let's see where this goes.

Btw, is a similar forum/dupe to be found/planned on LiveScience as well?

PS - A suitable subtitle would be "Post your homework problems here." :)

Hadn't considered this for LiveScience, but that's an interesting suggestion.

Nice subtitle, alp!

Can we connect two hundred megawatt wind turbines in series to get a million volts dc for a HVDC = high voltage direct current power line to carry the electricity to customers far away? At the receiving end, can we connect 2000 inverters in series across the HVDC power line to get various ac voltages at 60 hertz or 50 hertz?
There are other ways to accomplish this, but multiple conversions reduce efficiency. Neil

There is already a HVDC thread at a much more detailed level than Science 101, so will probably redirect your post there.

Also, if you are starting a discussion on a particular subject, please start a new topic, rather than adding it to the intro thread.

thanx
