"Got anything you could build R2D2 with? I think it would be great to have a remote-controlled Artoo that would have all the arms and other goodies in one robot."

Er .. yes.
http://www.robots-dreams.com/2006/12/putting_robots_.html#more
I highly recommend subscibing to a couple of robotics news channels to get an idea of what people on _hobbyist_ level can do these days, and what real cash-backed research labs are able to accomplish.

For instance, im getting myself a Bioloid kit for about $1000 bucks early next year. This will get me a full mid-sized humanoid robot, with full motion/force feedback capabilities. Add 6-axis IMU for $300 bucks and a linux-based single-board computer for about $100, two webcams for stereo vision and countless nights for programming, and i should be able to do almost half of the tricks that you see on these ASIMO videos.

Be careful with the scene in ROS where Artoo catchs the Comlink.

I also forgot about the rockets in AOC and ROS. I suggest allowing those to deploy, but the closest your R2D2 would get to flying would be some cute flames.

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}

Funny you should bring up robonaut. Recently wondered about him aswell, along with that floating sphere thingy that was to be used inside ISS, a bit like the Star Trek Tricorder.

Think it was on a Discovery Channel ISS special a few years back. Like you, I never heard of the Hubble plans. I remember being a bit skeptical as to how serious these ideas were, and rightly so it seems. It all sounded very exciting though.
"The choice is the Universe, or nothing ... " - H.G Wells

Combine four Robonauts and a SPHERES to get zero-G telerobotic volleyball. Cool.

Haha .. being quite an accomplished volleyballer myself, I'd have to say that a zero gee environment pretty much kills the game, atleast without significant changes to the rules. Point 38 gee on the other hand ..

I'd probably recommend ping pong for starters.
"The choice is the Universe, or nothing ... " - H.G Wells
