According to the Minor Planet Center (which really just has bare-bones info), the next comet to approach the Earth within 0.2 AU (pretty close, in other words; that's 1/5 the average distance between the centers of the Earth and the Sun) will be Comet 103P/Hartley. It will make its closest approach to Earth on October 20, 2010 at a predicted distance of 0.1207 AU.

One will get much closer the next year. Comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusakova will pass at a predicted distance of 0.06007 AU on August 15, 2011. Neither of these comets is expected to pose a threat. I have no idea how dramatic they'll be, or where they will appear in the sky. They're just the ones that will come the closest in the near future (as far as we know; not all comets have known orbits, and it's quite possible that an unknown long-period comet will show up as well).

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
