The shuttle needs to retire PERIOD
Its almost finished doing what it was supposed to do (yes that is sarcasm you are hearing). There was some great things that came out of the space shuttle (the hubble), but basically we stuck some tin cans together in space. yay us.
Why argue about the capsule? Its the best shape to come back to Earth from balistic speeds. I'm not interested in sexy space ships, just ones that do their job.
The job is opening the moon to private industry. Thats it.
