Why did Rutan do his flight and not do back to back flights to begin with (within 2 weeks)? Why doesn't the Da Vinci team have to do the single flight? I can understand why they wouldn't if they don't have to (to have a chance at winning obviously) Didn't Rutan kind of 'tip his hand' so to speak and let everyone else know how far along he was by just doing the solo shot?

Burt clearly answered that question after the successful flight. He said that the prize was secondary. What was primary was succeeding for the long haul.

rickm99, your post triggered a new thought for me.

In this day and age, we are all so cynical that we take nothing anyone says at face value.

But Burt is an actual straight-shooter, he is not beholden to anyone.

Perhaps when he says something, we should just go ahead and believe him, in spite of our conditioning to the contrary.
