Okay... I'm working on a lab report in my planetary astronomy class dealing with Lunar Standstills.
The question I want to ask is: Why does the moon appear to move along the horizon? And shouldn't it always rise due east and set due west?

Your answers will help and links too.

Thank You!!!

Majornature( />^_^<)
We are born. We live. We experiment. We rot. We die. and the whole process starts all over again! Imagine That!

Rena,

the moon appears near the horizon because you live in a place that is closer to the south pole/north pole (dunno where you live). In Kolkata where I live the moon rises in the east, comes to about 60 degrees from the horizon and then sets in the west. In southern india, the moon comes almost overhead. The closer you go towards the equator the moon's trajectory goes higher and higher from the horizon.

If you didn't know this, in New Zealand/Argentina, the sun never comes to the southern sky, it rises in the east and takes a trjectory through the north sky to the west. Tell me why?

bcoz those places are in the southern hemisphere and the sun travels along the equator which is north of those places.

Lol alokmohan!!!

I'm greatful Asish2. Our moons are different... My home world has two moon. During a certian period, every six years, we have this phenomena happen; our moons will looks as if they are about to crash... it only cross paths with each other. When they truly align, it looks more like the number eight...
We are born. We live. We experiment. We rot. We die. and the whole process starts all over again! Imagine That!
