We've been talking on the Mars Settlement Summary thread about forming an actual space agency funded and operated by private US Citizens. Heck, we're not just talking about it any more, we're doing it!

You can learn more on the Mars Settlement Threads, the short version is that we're going to register 6 domain names, three for the Foundation that guards the money contributed by 39 Million Americans, and three for the Agency that actually gives people the money to do space projects.

The overall goal of the two organizations is to turn America into a space-faring society - while maintaining the utmost in ethical standards and being impeccably internationally egalitarian.

The Foundation has been named:

AccessSpaceFoundation

ACCESS is an acronym for
Active Citizens Cultivating, Exploring and Settling Space

The .com and .org urls have been purchased and we're looking for people to buy and contribute the .org url as well as the matching three for the second organization.

Please help us name this organization well.

I think ACCESSSpace or perhaps ACCESSspace is the best sounding name.

Have you incorporated yet? And if/when so, will this be a 501(3)(c) non-profit corporation?

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Have you incorporated yet? Presumably, the answer is yes, at least part of the organization would be strictly non-profit, the foundation side. I anticipate that we will need a second organization which is more commercial in nature. I anticipate that our first money-raising effort will be to get enough money to have the lawyers sort it out.

For the next few months at least it remains an informal unincorporated cooperative effort.

Works for me.

Be cautious about that at least part of the organization would be strictly non-profit, the foundation side. I anticipate that we will need a second organization which is more commercial in nature.

Two business partners and I incorporated at the beginning of the year, and there are very strict guidelines as to non-profit's. One in particular is that it's almost impossible (legally) to have a corporation that's simultaneously non-profit, and for-profit.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Shuttle_RTF,

Thank you, that is an offer that will be remembered. For now, we are still getting together and forming up. We are working out a plan for ACCESS and it's route of action. We are soon beginning to build a website.

Like spacester said, the Mars Settlement threads are where we have been disscussing. They are open to anyone. If you are interested, check them out. Right now, we are very informal, in fact so informal that I feel wierd using 'we'. 'We' are us from these forums. 'We' are a group here contributing to an idea, evolving it, and taking initiative on it. 'We' are still us and you from the SDC forums. Anyone can join in and help out.

Your offer of support is greatly appreciated. We will pull through on it when we are ready.

Thanks RTF, you'll be an Affiliate I'm sure.

Looks like AccessSpace.com is the winner.

We need some American dude to buy that domain name and donate the rights to it to the ACCESS group.

Anybody? Anybody? Bueller? :)

How about AccessSpaceEnterprises.com?

Adding the s at the end to reduce confusion with NCC-1701 and her daughters. :)

Is that a go for everybody?

Yep.

You know registering a URL is dirt cheap?

That's what I call dirt cheap. One I saw was 10 bucks - so there ya go.

What I'm saying is you can't be looking for someone to donate 5 bucks? Did you mean the site building?

AccessSpaceEnterprises.com is clear on all extensions and a good name.

That 's' on the end does make a difference. The Star Trek connection was what worried me about the name at first, but not any more. Genius!

The idea is for the organization to be based on donation and collaboration, so the point of having different people purchase the domains and donate them to the cause is to show that this is indeed based on donation and collaboration from the very get-go.

It gives it a different feel than if spacester were to buy and set up the websites by himself. This is a group effort instead of an individual effort.

It's symbolic.

The Domain name will probably be the cheapest part of this venture. A server and bandwith, or webhosting will sting if you guys are worring about the pittance it costs for a Domain name.

Hey, didn't you fellas like my suggestion for a name?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver

Of course the domain name is dirt cheap. It's symbolic - what Arobie said . . .

I've got the web hosting covered. Go ahead, try to exceed the bandwidth we have available. Two mirrored servers right smack dab directly on top of the backbone - is that good enough? lol Free is a very good price, don't you think?

Sorry, I didn't explain: 'Society' doesn't work for me. Its an Enterprise, not a Society. Enterprises have financing plans. Societies don't IME.

We've got a Foundation and Enterprises, we're named. Thanks to all for your help.

edit: ghastly typo eliminated

I'll cover the six URL purchases then - about 30 odd bucks?

You'll get free linkage/advertising on NSF.com and the sister sites that will come on line over time.

I'll get our San Diego people to help too. This is a pretty nifty thing where one of the guys (Gareth) is a "page rank" guy. This is where he has a special system that populates you on the search engines with a very high rank. I don't know how it works as such, but needless to say NSF.com went from a standing start to 20,000 page impressions a day - with 90 per cent coming directly from typing in NASA or Shuttle related words into the likes of Google.

So we'll do that too.

Might interview one of you guys for an article (good publicity) as it's related given we need to "fly ships to get to Mars"

Hate to be the pessimist, but we now have 10,001 groups all doing the same thing. But, I'm in. I still think a merge with another group would be a better use of resources.

I'm still working on the waste water recycling, I should have a new post in a week or two.

Yeah, tons of small groups, if enough joined together we'd get somewhere and have more expertise. But more conflict, theres Ego's involved.

I don't have much technical expertise, so I won't be much help there. But, I'll be happy to help out any way I can. I agree, that getting other groups to join up with us will be most effective, and will help generate more funds. However, each group is already going to have their own agenda. We need to make sure that we have very clear cut rules/expectations before we move forward much more. Otherwise, ACCESS will end up going the way of many other similar, well meaning groups that wanted the same thing we do. When we do join forces with others, it may be more effective in the long run to have each group responsible for those aspects of the plan that they show the most strengths in. What this would accomplish is everyone doing their part to reach the over all goal. Otherwise, we still end up with duplication of effort, arguements, chaos, and wasting of resources.

Rae
