Even Junios officers like DeSalle come up big on occasion.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Well, yes, that's true as well. It means that your leader is comfortable with your abilities, and doesn't try to manage every moment of your work.

All part of a good leader, and a functional command discipline.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

A good commander is able to encourage and inspire initiative in his/her subordinates. Nurturing leadership development in his officers is harder than one might think. In many cases, it might be easier in the short term to micromanage - to do it himself - but that stagnates things.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

I do understand, having been both a section chief in the Army, as well as a supervisor several times.

Me, once I know someone is competent, I just cut them loose to do their job. I try to be informative, not onerous.

My big problem - must delegate more. I am one of those "I don't like to sit still" types. Not hyperactive, but I like to get right into things myself.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

"My big problem - must delegate more."

That is *so* hard for me.

In the military that is really bad. The thing is that in the military there is much more to the job than getting the job done. Developing your people is SO important.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Oh, my people are "developed" to the point of being damned near cynical.

That's my job. Damnit.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

If the question is 'who is more likely to get out of a tight situation without resorting to phaser fire or losing crew,' the answer is definitely Picard. It helps, of course, that he isn't adverse to firing the phasers when needed. It's just not his primary tactic.

But (and I know this is heresy in some quarters) my favorite Star Trek captain remains Janeway. Beautiful and dangerous -- who else could confront the Borg queen and survive?

Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

Depends on the situation - I would have liked to have seen Picard try to handle the Romulan incursion at the neutral zone better than Kirk did...

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

He always found a way to win -- even if it took a Corbomite manuver.

Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

If you look at Kirk compared to some of the other captains of the other Consitution class starships we meet in the series, and in books - he actually comes across as a more level headed, and less shoot from the hip than most.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

It's hard to compare Kirk and Picard. Apples and oranges. Each have their strengths.

Not to mention that the circumstances of the Federation are different in the two eras.

Kirk's Federation needed the adventurous swashbucking captain. A lot of Kirk's dilemmas required confrontation. His Federation was more akin to a "Wild West" phase.

Picard's Federation required a more cerebral and thoughtful Captain. Picard's Federation was far more oriented to chain of command and delegation of responsibility.

Having said all that, Kirk or Picard? Neither.

Will Ryker. He was smart, tough, tactically brilliant and had the perfect balance of aggressivness and critical thinking.

Ryker beat the Borg. Hands down, he's the Man.

"2012.. Year of the Dragon!! Get on the Dragon Wagon!".

Due to communications delays, Captains in Kirk's time were very much the Lone Ranger....

I still don't see Riker pulling a Corbomite Manuever.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Riker would more likely pull off the equivalent of the Corbomite Manuever in bed with some hot alien chick-oid.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

That raises an interesting question though, do you think that the first officers could be switched and have a team that would work well, i.e. Kirk-Riker and Picard-Spock?

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Picard-Spock would work quite well.

Kirk-Riker wouldn't due to the competition to boff the hot alien babes.

Kirk would be disgusted with Rikers attraction to the 'female' hermaphrodite, btw.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

The first time Riker told Kirk he couldn't go on a landing party, that would be it.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

What is this "Star Trek" of which you speak?

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

In my part of the world it was only put on after 11 pm at night, and only then if there wasn't a football match on. So I only saw episodes when my wife was doing night shift!

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke
