There are 3 other photos from the same orbit that do not show the phenomena, though.

Well actually there were 3 secret missions that are now declassified that were flown to the moon after Apollo 17. Nobody really knows the purpose of them, or for that matter who the crew was. to my untrained eye, it appears to be a piece of debris floating in front of the camera lens (distance impossible to determine). It does not appear to be an "object" resting on the lunar surface. this would explain its absence in the other 3 images.<br /><br />but, then again..that's just what NASA has paid me to say.
