December 23, 2005: NASA scientists have observed an explosion on the moon. The blast, equal in energy to about 70 kg of TNT, occurred near the edge of Mare Imbrium (the Sea of Rains) on Nov. 7, 2005, when a 12-centimeter-wide meteoroid slammed into the ground traveling 27 km/s.

"What a surprise," says Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) researcher Rob Suggs, who recorded the impact's flash. He and colleague Wes Swift were testing a new telescope and video camera they assembled to monitor the moon for meteor strikes. On their first night out, "we caught one," says Suggs.

Rest of the story:

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2005/22dec_lunartaurid.htm?list110584

Thanks to sloracer for the heads up!

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

As I mumbled in the first post, sloracer pointed it out over at Space Port - so the credit goes to him.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

You know, its funny, there is still a part of my brain that thinks of the processes that cratered the moon as something that happened a long time ago - sort of a done deal, not an ongoing process.

Must be my "wink of an eye" cosmic lifespan....

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

>...sort of a done deal, not an ongoing process...
It is a done deal, at least until the next one hits. Then it's done for you if you happen to be anywhere near it.

The people at A.L.P.O. search for lunar impacts during anual meteor showers. The have filmed several small but energetic impacts.
