I just finished watching "When We Left Earth" and "In the Shadow of the Moon" and found both stunning and amazing.

But I have a technical question. I've seen Apollo 13 and know how the SM spins around to connect with the LEM .. but I can't find any technical drawings (even on the NASA Apollo site) that show how the "tunnel" between the two modules is formed. Every drawing I find shows the probe/capture device setup .. which makes me wonder how that gets out of the way to make it possible to get a man from one module to the other.

Anyone have a drawing/diagram or even a book suggestion that shows how the two modules connected with the access tunnel between?

Thanks so much,

Marc

The Apollo Program will never cease to amaze me. I've been to the Smithsonian and seen the CM and it's like a NYC studio apartment. For the engineers to have figured out how to REMOVE and then STOW those parts in an already-cramped space is nothing short of amazing.

Thank you.

Marc

The "service module" never connects to the LM. The service module is the "stage" behind the command module (the capsule). The command module is where the connection occurs. Or, one can refer to the Command Service Module (CSM) being connected to the LM.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Also, the LM turned around and connected to the command module IIRC

But the Krell forgot one thing John. The LM then separated from the SIVB and the Apollo CM/SM?LM moved away from the SIVB.

Once the CM/SM mates to the LM the hatch is onpe and the docking probe is removed from the tunnel. That opens the tunnel between the LM and the CM.
