The launch was scrubbed, no new launch date announced so far.

"Arianespace has postponed tonight’s Ariane 5 lift-off following the detection of an anomaly during preparation for fueling of the launch vehicle.

A new launch date will be announced shortly."

But the Krell forgot one thing John. This is not a criticism of Nasa TV but I do like the presentation style of the ArianeSpace webcast....

It's nice to get a bit of an introduction to the folks in the launch centre and I also like the way the pre-recorded packages are cut into the broadcast.

Does anyone else agree?
Is there a production designer for NasaTV?

Anyway... I agree ArianeSpace has much better production design. The little flight progress diagram on the left is helpful when they cut away to something else.

Yes.... interseting trajectory too... it seems to lose altitude after the S1 separation until velocity reaches the magic ~9km/s number and then off it goes again.

What I like the most is the height/downrange graph that shows the height and velocity below.

It really clearly demonstrates how you get to orbit with rockets.

Go up until you are above most of the atmosphere, then tilt over, actually lose altitude but gain speed. This follows Newton's laws. It's not the hieght that gets you in orbit, it's the velocity.

You go straight up to get above as much as the atmosphere as you can, jettison the first stage and the satellite fairing, then work on gaining speed.

I would love to see the same display for a shuttle launch to compare.

Ain't fizzix wonderful

MW

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I think a few of the guys at NASA might have something to say about putting the orbiter at GEO... not least the crew

That wasn't my point.
I'd love to see the height/downrange/velocity profile in graphic form.

Sure the Commentator gives the info, but I'm a graphic guy.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. A relief!

Great that the new version worked. Ariane 5 is approaching now its limits but it's a good thing the capability has increased steadily from launch to launch(3 times in 18 months that the mass record is increased).
