The best science fiction uses the future and science to say something about life today - like the original Star Trek. Science fiction movies rarely get the science of the future right.

Indipendance and Freedom rocked. I mean, they could run their SSME's without an ET! And watch those RCS' fire away like crazy thusters!

Don't forget:
* constant thrust = constant velocity
* a shuttle with reduced thrust (crushed OMS pod) will accelerate ahead of a shuttle with full thrust

Just put away Armageddon and forget Deep Impact, and pick up the English dubbed PlanetES (Japanese animation) DVDs when they come out; it had me hooked with the first scene, a flashback, a suborbital passenger liner getting struck by a single screw. 26 x 22min episodes featuring working-class life of garbage collectors in LEO, what's not to like?

The first one was pretty good though and the second one wasn't too bad either. I do have to agree the third one was totally rediculous.

As Mike Nelson (another MST3K fan here) said, back when the movie came out (quoting from memory): "Watching Armageddon is like being tied to a pole and getting your head beaten with a wet sock. Repeatedly. It hurts." (apparently referring to the horrible music as well) I fully agree.

Sad, ain't it? (Lol, "Deep Throat" (an admittedly better film) grossed $600 mil in *back then* dollars, just googled)

I like it; watch it every couple months. When the crew tears into that drill thing in the hangar it cracks me up every time The water tank is cool too!

I gotta admit, those bits are pretty funny... , like a circus clown on a bicycle driving through a brick wall kind of funny, but still, I wish the MST3K crew had put this thing through the wringer... like "Teenagers from outer space". That was a hoot! But we digress… oh, yeah! Armageddon…

Oh! I forgot the best part-- the cosmonaut was a riot. "Russian components, American components, all made in Taiwan" THWACK!! I love that movie.

Maybe no one noticed this because everyone is so attuned to guns and excess violence in movies these days, but can someone explain to me the purpose of the machine gun that was unloaded - so that Buscetti could do the space dementia scene.

They have a scuffle in the ship and one of them goes "Hey Man, what are you doing with a gun in space?" Yet no one bats an eyelid at the machine gun they unload onto the surface. What was it for? Fighting off Asteroid Monsters?

You know that is a really good point, I never thought about it. What the HECK is there a machine gun doing on the top of that?

I try not to wonder too much during a movie because it makes me miss parts. At the end I'm left wondering how he attatched a switch with a six foot cord to a bomb that was either 800 feet down the hole or going to be real soon.

Now that you mention it, I wondered about that gun, too! I guess I just figgured it might have come in handy since the drill buggy used it's gun to blast out of the shuttle. And how did that second drill buggy get down off the cliff?

Well, remember the buggies were originally designed for the Mars mission, so maybe the guns were for fighting off the Martians....

CalliArcale commented about the use of Shuttle footage (believed to be Columbia) in the present GM Hot Button ad series ....

This usage *really* bothers me .... especially pre-RTF. I think the ad agency made a *bad* call in this regard.
Perhaps in 6 months when we are post-RTF ....

it's like using footage of Challenger to promote a July 4th Fireworks event .... just tacky.

I know they'll say "it's patriotic" but this was just poorly developed commercialism.

"The preceeding has been produced by My Opinion ... your opinion may vary"
I watched that ad again, and I'd misremembered one bit. They actually didn't screw up and show Mission Control. Although it was clearly a small set, it did appear that they were trying to emulate the real firing control room.

I don't think they were intentionally using Columbia, though. I suspect they just used the first footage they found, and in all likelihood, didn't even know which bird it was on the pad. So I don't think they're exploiting tragedy. They're just exploiting stock footage, basically. Most folks won't know which shuttle it is. Knowing that kind of makes it feel even weirder, to me.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

I found portraying NASA personnel 'asleep at the switch' offensive.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Anyone notice the big mess in The Day After Tomorrow.

The boffin at the Scottish Office appeared to be a Scot, he was watching Manchester United vs Celtic at Parkhead on the telly.

Now, if he was Scottish, it was very likely he'd be supporting Celtic...yet he was a Man U fan. Then, without warning, his accent became more English!

Then the commentary says "Manchester United, 3-1 up in the 62nd minute of the second half"

Eh? 45 mins a half!!

True, although Man U's support mainly comes from the post suburbs and counties of Southern England. But yes, with 60 million fans, they're everywhere, eek.

Just watched the 2005 Astronaut Hall of Fame Induction on NASA TV and they mentioned that one of the inductees, Joe Allen, was the 'technical advisor' on Armageddon! I immediately thought of this thread and the whole accuracy discussion. The joke was made during Joe's induction that he wanted the movie redone due to all the technical inaccuracy, but was told by the Hollywood types that, "Joe, it's just a movie!"

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!
