Well done, your heart is in it, which is half the battle.

And I oil change my 24v V6 every 3000 miles

are you comparing the Space Shuttle, a spacecraft on which bilions were spent, designed and maintained by the supposedly brightest minds in the world, with a car which costs maybe 20 grand, built on an assembly line and maintained by a guy in coveralls in a garage?

sorry but in no way can you draw any analogies between the two.

All the Shuttle stands for is broken promises.

http://asteroid-invasion.blogspot.com

http://www.solvengineer.com/asteroid-invasion.html

Why can't he???

Shuttle Basher Editorials find it more than fine to do so!

http://www.winonadailynews.com/articles/2005/08/03/jerome/jerome03.txt

By the way, I made a point of writing to him to point out his lack of research in the fact that Orbiters have a 100 mission lifespan.

Didn't have the balls to send me anything but a read reciept. Kinda says it all about Shuttle bashers.

its about time someone said something about the shuttle bashers

The reason people bash the shuttle is not because they are generally anti-space. In fact, most of us are pro-space, but we are sick of a vehicle that is more expensive than it should be, is very old, and cannot go beyond LEO. It has been close to thirty years since America has designed a new manned spacecraft. It is time to move on. The space shuttles are 20 years old. If you had a 20 year old car, you would expect it to not run as well as it used to, either. Someone in another thread made the comparrison, if you had an old car that would take $40k to fix, or you could buy a new, better car for the same price, wouldn't you want the new car? The same holds true for American manned spaceflight. The shuttle served its purpose at one time, but it is time for NASA, and for humanity, to move on.

" I would expect them to be at least as good as K.I.T.T. only with sexy female voices."

The Shuttle may not be as good as K.I.T.T. but at least we have capcom Julie now

Ok, at least that's something to debate, which is more than we can say about Lycan's "lame" comment aimed at someone who obviously has more passion than him.

The point is the US IS moving on. Retirement in 2010, so why don't people cut the STS some slack, recognise its amazing contribution and move on.

You'll all probably get your uninspiring capsuals to play with in the years to come. Where space flight will be following by physics majors and geeks and that's about it.

No I'm not comparing the two vehicles! I was referring to people, very much like yourself, that can't seem to grasp the concept of living every day in much the same way that you say that the NASA folks shouldn't be.

As a matter of fact, besides my 1996 Electra Glide, my daily driver is a 1977 Chevrolet 1/2 ton pick-up thats been over 300,000 miles! I rebuilt the engine, trans, front end, etc. all in one sitting in 1993! Its been trouble free since then! I may not be able to go rounds with some of you educated folks verbally but I doubt you'd win a match of skill with me? I'm not saying I'm the best by any means, just that I'm very good at it. I'd much rather have it then one of these new ones that have all the untested " modern tech" crap on it that they keep coming up with just to say they are using the latest thing out in computors to impress people like you!

I need to go to work now, but I'll try and clarify my thoughts when I get out later.

Hah... uhhh... what?

Oh and Shuttle-RTF, it's just that I don't know how to argue with this guy as I have no idea what he's trying to say.

"You'll all probably get your uninspiring capsuals to play with in the years to come."

So shuttle bashers are just a bunch of lame soreheads. But you feel that bashing a spacecraft that hasn't even been developed yet is just hunky-dory. Things that make you go Hmmm. The coolest thing about the shuttle is where it goes, not how it gets there.

Ok Lycan.

Understood...and I see what you mean by that. I think his post is - simply put - a passionate statement of support for STS.

I'm the first to admit that my support for the STS is down to being drawn in by the beauty and grace by which the Shuttles operate.

Yes, they are very expensive
Yes, it would appear the design was not favoured by engineers back in the 70s.
Yes, it's had failures.

However, it has also had a heck of a lot of great success and what people need to understand is there are a lot of people who have been drawn into support STS because we were drawn in by those successes.

We can't ignore the reason "why" we support STS, we can acknowledge the faults, but some of the blind Shuttle Bashing from the media especially is not factual, and that is what we have to draw exeception to. I believe that is where the first post came from - from frustration at the lack of acknowledgement on the successes to balance the argument.

>So shuttle bashers are just a bunch of lame soreheads.<

Not at all

I believe some of the arguments against the Shuttle are made by lame soreheads. Note, some.

I'm very open to people who appreciate what we have right now. We have three Orbiters that have a job to complete before retirement.

I'd draw the same execptions to people who want the STS to contine for another 10-15 years. I support retirement. I support moving on to the next generation of vehicles (and that includes In-Line Saturn 5 style Shuttle Derived launchers with capsuals etc.) I know we aren't going to be flying winged craft to the Moon and Mars - I know the wings are only needed for one purpose and it's not in space!

But why are we seeing people simply going on about how crap the Shuttle is? It's a redundant argument at this moment in time.

We all know the Shuttle is getting retired, yet we've got bashing in the media and some forums while we have a superb mission on-going right now.

Just doesn't sit well with me, imho.

>The point is the US IS moving on. Retirement in 2010, so why don't people cut the STS some slack, recognise its amazing contribution and move on.

Yes, Shuttle is an amazing system, I argue that it has outlived it's usable shelf life. I advocate immediate retirement of the Orbiters, re-use of the launch pads and the "propulsion backbone". I also feel like ATK's whore for pimping it, but it's the best solution right now, check out http://safesimplesoon.com/

Retiring the Orbiters can free up resources for finishing ISS using the new HLV. The remaining modules are going to sit on the ground for many more years anyway, why not integrate them and boost them all at once?

/>You'll all probably get your uninspiring capsuals to play with in the years to come. Where space flight will be following by physics majors and geeks and that's about it.

Because going to the Moon and Mars is SO STUPID, right? You prefer that we keep going in circles indefinitely? Who cares what the spacecraft looks like, lets GO! If you really think that manned lunar landings won't be inspiring for the masses, you might want to reexamine your assumptions. If you want spaceplanes, go work for XCOR or Rocketplane Inc, they are actually building the next generation of winged spacecraft.

We need a first generation of pioneers.

"...I also feel like ATK's whore for pimping it..."

Um -- normally you're one or the other. You can be the pimp or the whore, but you have to choose a single role.

Read all of my comments before jumping in with an assumption as you did with your final paragraph.
