Since this is such a short piece, I'll just paste it in from this link:

Babylon 5 Movie Starts Filming in April
Source: Production Weekly
December 8, 2004

Steven Beck will direct a big screen adaptation of the popular sci-fi TV series Babylon 5. The movie, titled The Memory of Shadows, is intended for theatrical release and was written by series creator J. Michael Straczynski. Production Weekly reports that the project starts filming this April in the UK.

In "Shadows," the technology of the ancient and extinct Shadow race is being unleashed upon the galaxy by an unknown force, and Earthforce intelligence officer Diane Baker, whose brother was recently killed in a mysterious explosion, it out to find out who is behind the intergalactic conspiracy.

Joining her is Galen, a techno-mage who has been charged with keeping the technology out of the hands of those who would abuse it.

One note: the Shadows are not actually extinct within the current Babylon 5 canon. They've gone away with the other First Ones, and presumably are alive and well someplace else, possibly beyond this galaxy. I'm not sure if the author of this preview misunderstood that, or if something has actually happened to the Shadows....

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Weren't Galen and the techno-mages in the short lived spin-off Babylon5: Crusade? There was an alien race that were the servants of the shadows and they used some of the shadows technology. The show was on Fox at first and barely made it through its 1st season(shown at odd times and episodes out of order).

Perhaps they are planning to redo that series.

I never saw Crusade, but I seem to recall reading that yes, Galen was a technomage involved in that series.

In reply to:

There was an alien race that were the servants of the shadows and they used some of the shadows technology.

I could be mistaken, but I believe that was the Drakh, who are hanging out on Centauri Prime by the end of Babylon 5: Season Five. I think they created some kind of plague or something? I'm vague on the details. Hopefully it'll come out on DVD soon. (I'm in withdrawal!)

And yes, the Drakh were indeed servants of the Shadows. The reason they came to Centauri Prime was because of the Shadows' involvement with that world, through Londo's mistakes.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

In reply to:

the dorky holographic fire-control from Legend o/t Rangers.

Good lord, I hope that's not in there. I agree -- that was one of the silliest things in that TV movie. I mean, who seriously would design a fire control system that is extremely physically taxing to use? Your weapons officer pulls a hamstring and you're left weaponless....it's stupid! It doesn't even look cool, so there goes the artistic license excuse.

But even if it's in there, I'll watch it. I just want more B5!

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

It was the kind of thing that a third-grader would invent for playtime -- fun at that age, and laughably improbable for any older viewers.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

yes. I liked Heinleins take on future war. War ships had sub-serviant minds to do the actual WAR-faring, while the pbi had mini warships in the form of fighting suits.

Any useful ship speed in space, would require AT THE LEAST automatic defense weapons. Actually, it would require a screen of them, traveling WELL before the craft, or even a successful parry of an attack, would result in debris in your path almost as dangerous as a weapon.

And when you have B5's wormholes, you gotta ramp up to auto detection of wormhole formation resulting in auto targeting of defensive attack as well.

Thats what I DIDN"T like about B5. It didn't carry the weapons and defense systems, down the obvious path , in a universe that has wormholes.

The Forever-war by J Hadleman (sp?) had the best depiction of space warfare, imo. All automatic, and the survivors viewed video and radar footage, to work out " What the hell was that ! "

The jumpgates themselves are almost never targetted, because they are a valuable resource and generally both sides want to be able to use it afterwards. (Although Sheridan did destroy a jumpgate once, choosing one which was somewhat expendable, in order to take out an enemy ship.)

Some ships had difficulty generating jump points and firing their main weapons at the same time because of power needs. Others would happily come out of the jump point with weapons blazing. And those who couldn't fire for a while would often surround themselves with fighters or smaller ships, which of course didn't have to worry about the power drain.

Of course, these limitations are not merely due to the logical conclusions of the technology. In some respects, the limitations were applied in order to keep jump gate technology from becoming a deus ex machina.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Ya gotta have drama and believability at the same time. IMO jumpgate technology does the job better than any other FTL I've seen on the screen.

Thanks for the heads up calli.

Woo-Hoo! I'll be in the theater for the premiere of this one for sure!

Have you tried the freeware game ‘I’ve found her’? I think you can find it at www.ifh.firstones.com . It’s a pre-quel to the B5 series in which you fly a starfury for a variety of missions in normal space and hyperspace.

I think it is a very faithful representation of the B5 universe and really shows how much thought has gone into the series at a conceptual level regarding the technologies used etc.

More B5 games and mods can be found at www.firstones.com
