This could very easily be a crew member from the подводн-корабль 1, Russia's Military spaceship submarine that was lost in orbit about 40 years ago. There has been some wild speculation out there as to where they landed. But a few of them have probably been able to migrate recently due to the increase of oxygen in Mars atmosphere that was caused by some of the spreading of microbes that latched on to the Oppurtunity Rover.

You wanna talk some jive? As noted by, among others, Emily Lakdawalla of The Planetary Society, the "figure" is actually very small, just a few centimetres tall, and most likely just an oddly eroded rock (just one of many):

http://www.planetary.org/blog/article/00001305

Paul

-----------------

The Meridiani Journal
a chronicle of planetary exploration
web.me.com/meridianijournal

You're all wrong - it's a danish mermaid. Mars once had water and was colonised by danish mermaids. or is it the other way round. Martian mermaids colonised denmark....

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7205004.stm

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

"Martian mermaids colonised denmark"

Is correct. They arrived via an extremely long water spout that stretched from the oceans of mars (now dried up, all of the water was sucked up by the water spout and sent to earth) to the oceans of earth. But the one shown in the NASA image is not alive, it is petrified. She was left behind when the last of the oceans were sucked out before she could jump in.

I have to disagree. For proof I present the following:

http://www.enterprisemission.com/images/Spirit/safe.jpg

From none other than the eminent, Richard Hoagland. He has mislabeled the image, as it clearly shows and additional 5 petrified mermaids.

[edit: added this]

While looking for additional mermaid photos, I stumbled onto this mysterious item. Huh?

http://snakeandthehunterenterprises.com/research/23/23.htm

There are more like it here:

http://groups.msn.com/ArtifactsofMars/mars.msnw

Look closely, none of them have clothes. I think it's ok though since they are petrified.

Here's a quote from the website with most of the photos. He must be qualified.

"Part of my job is to look for small details in photos. Working with state of the art equipment in a retail environment, I have the respect both of my peers and customers, many of whom will come looking for me specifically. As any experienced photo processer will tell you, there is much more to the art than just putting film in a machine. You have to know how to adjust lighting and color, compensate for bad lighting if you take professional photos (I do), assist customers with decisions regarding their images, and scores of other actions."

http://snakeandthehunterenterprises.com/mars1.html

In all fairness, though, he identifies the object as things as varied as high tech martian gadgets, to whatever. I was the one who, after close examination of the photos, identifed the naked mermaids. It might be interesting to note and might call in to question my findings, that quite often ink blots also appear to me to be naked women.

My favorite part of his list of qualifications is:

" assist customers with decisions regarding their images, and scores of other actions."

I wonder what scores of other actions are? I pretty sure they don't sell fries at one hour photo. Of couse it could be that he works near the camera department at Wal-Mart, that would open up scores of other actions. Possibly even emergencys like, vomit clean up on isle three, and other such actions, even scores of other such actions. Someone that can be relied on to handle emergencies like that certainly must be qualified to do photo analysis.
