First, the idea that "dark" is a synonym for unknown, unobserved, etc is incorrect. It merely means it does not give off light, nor interact with light.

Also, Neutrinos are a form of dark matter, specifically under the category of "hot" dark matter (meaning highly mobile from the definition of temperature).

They are electrically neutral, and so do not interact with light. They do interact with matter, but only from direct collisions. The flash of light produced in neutrino detectors is not due to the neutrino, but from the impacted atom(s) creating a cascade effect as they plow through other atoms.

Sadly, "hot" dark matter does not fit observatoins completely, as galactic rotation and interaction models require large amounts of clumped or "cold" dark matter to float around (like hydrogen nebulae).

The presence of dark matter is, primarily, detected indirectly by how it affects it's surroundings. We see galaxies move in ways that can't be explained by the gravitational force of the observed matter (the matter that gives off light, and the matter that occludes it).

Now, there are factions in the field that are pursuing a different alternative than dark matter, and those are primarily MOND proponents that say gravity behaves a bit differently than we expect on large scales. Unfortunately MOND keeps running into various observational hurdles that sends it back to the drawing board every 5 years or so.

So, Dark matter, in some form does exist, it does explain some of what we see, but it isn't positive if it is the answer yet.

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector.
