Thought this was interesting.

Something for SELENE / Kaguya to follow up on.

Apparently Dave Scott & the Late Jim Irwin, disturbed the most lunar regolith around the
LM Falcon, than the other Apollo astronauts & also LM Falcon disturbed the lunar soil
more than the others.

Also there appear to be two fresh impact craters post Apollo nearby.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Interesting, this is the first I have heard of this. How long has this been available?

Hi slidelock, your guess is as good as mine. I only came across it by accident, whilst looking
for further Apollo 15 lunar science observations. I thought that was most
interesting, so posted it here. I was aware that Clementine imaged the entire moon, but
not at that level of detail.

I did look for similar for the other Apollo sites, after finding this, but there was nothing.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Thank you very much telfrow.

Wonder it escaped me for so long, as that is the sort of thing I look for.

Very interesting, not just the landing site, but also the fresh craters.

I would expect JAXA will look at this site with Selene, hope so anyway.

IMO the Apollo 15 & 17 sites were the most interesting (although none were boring)
& have a soft spot for 15 due to having met the Late Jim Irwin & Alfred Worden in
person (Dave Scott was not present unfortunately).

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. You've never heard of the Flat Moon Society??

It's actually easier since we only see one side of the cardboard cutout anyway. On the earth, people live on the other side of the ball.
On the moon, only the aliens and their bases live on the other side....no humans

Edited for humorous effect.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Impossible to ever prove to them really. Even if you take a pic of the flag in high def they would claim its fake. They clearly dont want to believe scientific evidence

Very interesting topic Andrew.

Exciting to think we have now entered the year where we will see the space craft arriving at the Moon which can, beyond doubt see the Apollo landing sites.

I do not want to get started on the conspiracy theorists. They make my blood boil!

It sickens me to think that anybody involved in something as awesome, immense, and historic as the Apollo missions should have to suffer these ignorant theories. belittling what they achieved. I can only imagine how stunned many of those involved are at polls which show just how many people now believe NASA did not go to the Moon.

Anyway, my real reason for posting, i found this image from the Apollo 15 command module. It shows the Apollo 15 landing site as a bright, white patch of disturbed ground towards top right of the image.

Obviously this is in contrast to the Clementine "dark" patch.

http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/ap15fj/photos/pan/as15-9814p.jpg

"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! btw, what gives the shading difference?

I was wondering if the exhaust simply changed the texture of the surface (made it more or less bumpy) so it caught the light differently. In that case darker patches could become lighter patches depending on the suns angle.

Hi KelvinZero.

I think you have it spot on. The viewing geometry was very different.

From slightly 'behind' the patch may appear dark, as you see the 'shadowed' side of the
disturbance, where as Anthmartian's image shows the disturbance from almost the zenith, seeing
the sunlit side, hence appearing bright.

Also I like Anthmartian's image, showing the incredible resolution of the immediate area
& of the collapsed lava tube Hadley Rille.

Wonder where he got it from & if there are similar for the other sites, as well as other Lunar
locations???

Can't wait for the Lunar Reconnaisance Orbiter with the LROC camera & hope that JAXA
will lower SELENE's orbit, with the impressive HDTV & Terrain Cameras.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. A few years back I remember a SMART-1 image, that claimed to show the shadow of a Apollo lander.

I'm not sure, but I think these are the two existing images from orbit with landers somewhat showing in them.

Edit: I can't find the image now, but I remember it clearly and the text, that claimed that the shadow in the image was the Apollo lander.

Andrew : it was a wikipedia page of some kind which i found the image on. I just did a Google search for "apollo 15 landing site" There was not a lot else on the page.

But, playing around with the URL from the image, i managed to get to the main page, and from there i found the image journal page.

http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/ap15fj/a15images.htm

I have not looked through the images here to see if there is anything helpful yet.

I agree, about the feature looking light or dark depending on sun angle etc.

"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy!
