Is there really any scientific insight to be gained from yet another test of General Relativity? Why not accept that it is accurate everywhere it applies beyond any reasonable limit, yet incomplete, and devote brainpower and resources instead to reconciling GR and quantum theory?

The article says that any deviation from the equivalence principle could provide the needed information to reconcile GR and Quantum Theory. No deviation was seen larger than 1 part in 10^15, now they are going for a hundredfold improvement to 1 in 10^17.

Because there is currently no accepted way to reconcile GR & QM. By pushing the very limits of both, we have a chance to discover areas where they may overlap & allow us to reconcile them.
