In the article that I just read about Mercury's escarpments it implies that crust moves over the top of crust, when the fact of the matter is crust becomes denser over time and it plunges down into the mantle, in most cases. But at other times it could go the other way. It is a situation where the power goes to the dominant factor.

The depressions are most likely places where the crust is caving into pockets of primordial ice, mud volcanic activities around the depressions is what gives me that impression. Given how close Mercury is to the sun it must have been pummeled by comets frequently.

I haven't quite figured out how to install the article in connection with the drivel I comment on. It was a story that talked about the satellite that is sweeping in to Mercury's orbit. 2025 is when it will reach perigee.
