There are two identical Digital clocks......... one kept at the top of a shelf and the other kept at the bottom. both are started at the exact same moment.

After a few Weeks it is seen that the one at the top of the shelf is running faster than the one at the bottom.i.e.. if the one a the bottom shows 10:10..........the one at the top shows 10:15.!!.This has also been scientifically proven.

Can ANYONE give a proper logical and reasonable explanation as to why this happens.....??????

Temperature stratification in the room causing resistance variances in the clocks resistors, changing their relative speeds. Also they could just be cheaply made clocks, no matter how much you paid for 'em

Seriously; most clocks vary somewhat and the good ones are made to re-adjust their speed if you have to set them frequently.

Of course the clocks could be in a very strong gravity gradient.....

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

Or maybe it's relativity. The clock on the top moves faster as the Earth rotates

Oh but then the top one would slow down, so that's wrong

"This has also been scientifically proven."
-----

given you say this, I take it you are about special relativistic effects in a theoretical way

it happens because gravitation field contains energy and so the bottom shelf clock finds itself in an area of higher energy than the clock on the top shelf - it is located in stronger gravitational field than the other clock - and so it ticks slower

higher energy generally causes all processes to slow down and it can be caused by stronger gravitation or motional acceleration or whatever (gravitation is equivalent to acceleration and so I used the qualifier 'motional'

of course one could say directly that stronger gravitation on the lower shelf means larger gravitational acceleration... but that doesn't go far enough for us inquiring minds does it
and as always my views are not what you might find in textbooks

vanDivX

Did you try moving the top clock to the bottom, and the bottom clock to the top? Conditions from top to bottom should make negligible difference. Likely one or both clocks are inaccurate. Neil

You all got it wrong. The guy wakes up, swings his arm, mashes the buttons on the only clock he can reach (the lower one) and keeps hitting the "back" button on "time set" instead of the snooze button. This is also scientifically proven.

Heck, my alarms clocks within reach usually don't survive "first contact"

But the Krell forgot one thing John. This is why my alarm clock is on the other side of the room from me.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Yeah. Without them, I would wake up at 11am every day, and be awake until 3am.

Instead, they force you to be a "morning" person. Alarm clock anecdote;

After my wife and I returned from our honeymoon the day came when we had to go back to work. Being a very deep sleeper who couldn't wake to normal clocks I made my own; a 3" fire bell plugged into a 24 hr timer.

The next morning I awoke to my new wife virtually hanging from the ceiling by her claws

She had never stayed over on a work night, so she had never seen/heard it before.

Ever since she has woke to the alarm then shook me awake.

I'm a bit confused, surely the top shelf one would gain time i.e, run behind the bottom one

nik_gr8test_rulz:
This has also been scientifically proven.

Me:
You never specifically stated what was proven scientifically. Is it that two cheap clocks do not stay in synch?...or was it that relativitvistic effects can be proven by two clocks that don't stay in synch depending on where they are on a shelf?

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. I HATE alarm clocks.....

But without them, I'd never have a job

you don't know what you missing, late sleepers/risers are known for earning nobel prize and that earns you better than most jobs

I love alarm clocks because of the pleasure I get out of ignoring them, like today it woke me at seven (actually it just called my attention you could say since I had some 8h of sleep behind my belt by then and woke naturaly at 6...) but I daydreamed till eleven and I am now again that one bit closer to that nobel prize, anyway that's what I tell those who look at my ways at askance

among other I figured this: if I was the guy who started this thread I would take the time difference as evidence that I am infalling into black hole and so would give up on getting up even at eleven and just stay in bed, might be hard though convincing others like your psychiatrist, the exceptionaly gifted ones are typically misunderstood, what you gonna do

in meantime I am installing second shelf and looking for second alarm clock to put on it as I see the utility of it as advanced warning system for those in the know

vanDivX

To return to the original topic, perhaps the original poster will return and tell us what was the point of the topic.

If two identical clocks are off by 5 minutes in "a few week", they are clearly defective, or are in some extreme environmental difference.

What is the "scientific proof" that this has occurred.

What type of clock are they?

Clocks that derive the time from power line frequencies?
Crystal or RC oscillators?
Mechanical pendulum or watchspting?
Hamsters on a treadmill?
Water or Sand?

Everything is pure speculation until some facts are supplied.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. 'perhaps the original poster will return and tell us what was the point of the topic'
---

well, I suppose we can make of it what we want

clearly you guys think he is trolling or pulling our legs but with young generation coming in he could well be the representative of the new generation of scientists you know

seeing how theoretical sciences go these days I wouldn't be surprised at all

you would drill him to supply relevant facts (clearly you are 'old school') but his strengths might lie elsewhere, like he might know all about warming up of the Earth and how we are killing ourselves...

vanDivX

That's why I'd like to know what he was getting at.
I haven't made any decision as to what to think of his post, since without answers to the questions I asked, it's pure speculation.
I have no reason to suspect it's a troll or a leg puller yet.

I await his reply.

But the Krell forgot one thing John.
