As someone was saying in another thread, its a pretty cool photo!

Just wondering if Rosetta is the first spacecraft in Mars space to capture an image of itself or first spacecraft ever, for that matter, to snap a self-portrait outside of Earth orbit?

http://www.esa.int/images/CIVA_Mars_30_H.jpg
I'm not sure, I think Venera might have the honor for landers. But I have no idea about space self portraits.

Try this link.

Mars Global Surveyor images Mars Odyssey & the ESA Mars Express in Mars orbit.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world.
In reply to:

But I have no idea about space self portraits.

Strictly speaking, Rosetta did not take the picture; the Philae lander did. I think this may be the first portrait of a mothership by a lander/impactor, though. Cassini imaged Huygens, but I don't recall any time it's been done the other way around.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Hi CalliArcale. It is true, Cassini did image Huygens post release.

Also Deep Impact imaged the impactor post release, as did Mars Express with Beagle 2.

Not to mention Mars Pathfinder imaging Sojourner & also the other way around, in Ares Vallis on Mars.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. We have enough relics on Mars to start a nice size Museum!!! Lets hear it for the Martian Air and Space Museum.

Yeah I was just checking if you guys knew your stuff!

Seriously, that webpage called "MGS Sees Mars Odyssey and Mars Express" is pretty impressive. But this Rosetta shot is far *sharper* than anything I think we've seen to date!

I think if you replaced Mars with a backdrop of Earth, you'd think that was taken from ISS or something.

It's definitely my wallpaper for the week!

http://www.space.com/imageoftheday/image_of_day_070226.html
