Everybody must have wondered about this - we're a nation of "firsts" counters.

OK, so the astronauts are highly trained professionals and wouldn't dream of doing such a thing ... blah, blah, blah (though I don't believe it). But what about space tourists - they're not bound by any such professional rules of conduct (or silence) and they're more likely to blab.

It would be worth $20M just to set that record ....

LOL! At least astronauts don't have to wear heart monitors anymore like apollo, that would be interesting for mission control, "Hey, why are both of their heart rates 200 beats per minute?'

To have any privacy at all, they'd have to go outside.

Ummm....
Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

It was actually part of the space race during the cold war. The Russians tried to be first but they failed. Like the N-1 the thing just didn't get up there. They at first attributed it to the fact that the female cosmonaut from sturdy peasant stock looked like she needed a shave. Later missions and further experimentation revealed that the problem was blood migration to the upper body. Years of research and millions of dollars later and NASA developed Viagra. That and the robotic arm allowed them to capture the record.
I suspect it happened already, years ago.

- Ed Kyle

So any bets on how many times in the next few days Anousheh will be asked if she wants to join the 200 mile high club?

I guess it depends on what you mean by "first in sex".

Male + Female?
Male + Male?
I don't think there has ever been an all female crew, so no
Female + Female.
If we're talking about it for scientific purposes, then its possible Mr. Kyle is correct. If we're talking about for recreational purposes, Mr. Kyle is probably wrong.

I can't imagine it happening on a shuttle under any definition. Having a three person crew do it for scientific reasons has unpleasant risks for the person left out, so I strike three person crews.

So it would have had to happen in a capsule, and a two person one at that. So that means Gemini or Vostok and those flights were 40 years ago. Were there any mixed sex two person crews on Vostok? Could they take their suits off in those cramped capsules? I doubt it, so then we get into Clintonian definitions of what sex is.

I think we're going to have to wait for Starship Enterprise quarters before the fun stuff begins to make this all worth speculating about.

"I can't imagine it happening on a shuttle under any definition."

Remember, the first U.S. co-ed crews flew more than 20 years ago, before the tailhook scandal gave fighter-jock sex a bad name. These were all Type-AAA people, risk-takers, afraid of little, and part of a group that acted like a fraternity in many ways, both in that they "partied" and in that they would have covered for each other (to this very day). It wouldn't surprise me if one of the first female astronauts had thought about, or acted upon, the chance to establish a "first". Male-female relationships, both acknowledged and rumored, existed among the early shuttle astronauts. Some of these "couples" flew together.

- Ed Kyle

What would they call THAT particular club? "Mile-High" isn't quite high enough...
"Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life." - Rachel Carson
