I was surfing Google mars and was checking out Valles Marineris using infrared and it really seems like a mamouth glacier. I have loaded a few images to get everyones take on this. This is probably old news, but thought I would ask any how.<br /><br />Main Image<br /><br />http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v607/Bearack/Valles_Marineris.jpg<br /><br />second image<br /><br />http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v607/Bearack/marsglacier.jpg<br /><br />third image<br /><br />http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v607/Bearack/marsglacierFlow.jpg<br /><br />fourth image<br /><br />http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v607/Bearack/marsglacierFlow2.jpg<br /><br />Thanks in advance. <br /><br />EDIT for fix <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p><br /><img id="06322a8d-f18d-4ab1-8ea7-150275a4cb53" src="http://sitelife.space.com/ver1.0/Content/images/store/6/14/06322a8d-f18d-4ab1-8ea7-150275a4cb53.Large.jpg" alt="blog post photo" /></p> </div>

It is and optical illusion. Look at the pictures upside down and the glacier will now look like a valley. It has to do with how our brains assume where a light should be.<br /><br /> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

Thanks, could the valley have been created from an ancient glacier? <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p><br /><img id="06322a8d-f18d-4ab1-8ea7-150275a4cb53" src="http://sitelife.space.com/ver1.0/Content/images/store/6/14/06322a8d-f18d-4ab1-8ea7-150275a4cb53.Large.jpg" alt="blog post photo" /></p> </div>

<blockquote><font class="small">In reply to:</font><hr /><p>I think the current theory is that they were created by a catastrophic flow of water following a rapid melt of water ice (or perhaps a series of such flows). Similar catastrophic flows have happened on Earth, although the lack of atmosphere on Mars makes the details quite different. <br /><br />I'm sure Jon Clarke would know the current theory better than me. <p><hr /></p></p></blockquote><br /><br />Thanks again.<br /><br />It's very intriguing to me that such a massive formation occurred. This formation makes the Grand Canyon look like a side walk crack. I would be very interested in Jon Clarkes thoughts on this.<br /> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p><br /><img id="06322a8d-f18d-4ab1-8ea7-150275a4cb53" src="http://sitelife.space.com/ver1.0/Content/images/store/6/14/06322a8d-f18d-4ab1-8ea7-150275a4cb53.Large.jpg" alt="blog post photo" /></p> </div>
