Hasn't NASA learned about Lucky Number 13?

Just an observation. NASA in the past has been very unlucky when the number 13 had something to do with a mission. And the agency has been very superstistious in recent years concerning the "curse" of number 13 by avoiding it whenever possible. With the upcoming shuttle mission, a record 13 people will lodge at Hotel International Space Station. God willing nothing goes wrong during the mission, I wonder if those superstitious ones at NASA would consider that to mean that the curse has been broken and maybe we will see the end NASA managers avoiding the use of the number 13 during planning of future missions.

Thirteen is a number that comes after 12 and before 14.

There have been lots of successful 13th missions BTW.

Discoverer 13 (the first successful mission in the satellite series)

Explorer 13

Pioneer 13.

And from the Russian program Soyuz 13, Soyuz T-13, TM-13, TMA-13, Zond 13, Cosmos 13, Venera 13.

And let's not forget the success of ISS expedition 13 or the 13th shuttle mission.

You don't really believe it is really unlucky or cursed do you?

In Witchcraft, 13 is a very lucky number, What is a baker's dozen? 13. 12 apostles plus Christ equals how many? 13. We have 10 fingers, 2 hands, plus ourselves, for a total of 13.

Apollo 13 launched at 13:13 CST. The faulty component which is believed to have blown could have failed on any of the flights, and could have failed after the landing had been completed, or while the landing was in progress, and there would have been 3 dead astronauts. NASA has actually been fairly lucky as far as the number '13' goes, in my opinion.

That specific part on Apollo 13 had been used for testing; no other part was as likely to fail (not that they realized that at the time, obviously). But you're right -- it's amazing how well that mission turned out.

AFAIK, NASA is not especially nervous about 13s. But January is a very bad month for them. All of the fatalities (Apollo 1, STS-51L, STS-107) were associated with January launches. Coincidence? Undoubtedly. But it's still a little spooky, and having to go through so many anniversaries of tragic accidents in close succession has got to create a sobering mood.

let me show you why 13 is a scary number:
13 = 1011 in binary
1011 was exactly one month after 9-11
1011 was the year that the Kingdom of Jerusalem was established (by the crusaders)
1011 is the year 4861 in the hebrew calendar
4861 in base 2 is 1001011111101
1001011111101 contains 9 1's and 4 0's
9 + 4 = 13

I agree with the original poster. Dan Marino wore the number 13 and never won a Superbowl.
