Homemade telescope

I'm trying to make a Galileo type telescope out of an old childs telescope and an old 10 mm eye piece. The kids scope objective lens is 40mm and the tube is about 2 ft long. How long should the tuble in in ordor to make the image somewhat clear? Should I find a longer tube or do I need to cut away some of the tube? I realize that this is probable a waste of time and that it wont be that powerful, but I wanted to see if I could make one that showed everthing his did. Thanks for all your help.

Not sure what you mean by "trying to make a Galileo type telescope"?
