Hi, in response to mention of Honor Harrington in the TV thread, I just wanted to mention that at least the first of the H.H series is free online from the publisher.

http://www.baen.com/library/067157793X/067157793X.htm?blurb

Baen also has several other novels free online
http://www.baen.com/library/

I have also seen the entire series available on CD in the back of one of the books that I borrowed from a library.

Here is a wiki article that also mentions the CD, I think.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Weber

I know it is sort of petty of me. I can't stand any book, where the male author deliberately choses a female protaganist simply to appeal to female fans.

Nothing could be clearer than that he did this in this series.

(like I say, I realise I ought to rise above petty marketing ploys, but I am human, I err on occasion).

The fluffy ball of fur in Honor Harrington's lap stirred and put forth a round, prick-eared head as the steady pulse of the shuttle's thrusters died. A delicate mouth of needle-sharp fangs yawned, and then the treecat turned its head to regard her with wide, grass-green eyes.

"Bleek?" it asked, and Honor chuckled softly.

"'Bleek' yourself," she said, rubbing the ridge of its muzzle. The green eyes blinked, and four of the treecat's six limbs reached out to grip her wrist in feather-gentle hand-paws. She chuckled again, pulling back to initiate a playful tussle, and the treecat uncoiled to its full sixty-five centimeters (discounting its tail) and buried its true-feet in her midriff with the deep, buzzing hum of its purr. The hand-paws tightened their grip, but the murderous claws—a full centimeter of curved, knife-sharp ivory—were sheathed. Honor had once seen similar claws used to rip apart the face of a human foolish enough to threaten a treecat's companion, but she felt no concern. Except in self-defense (or Honor's defense) Nimitz would no more hurt a human being than turn vegetarian, and treecats never made mistakes in that respect.

Bleak indeed.

Fair enough. It did get a bit cutesy in places. The treecat stuff never did anything for me. Very teenaged target audience.

Personally I love female characters, but only if they could have appeal to both genders.

Hey, does anyone else think 'Frankie' off Sky Captain was based on Honor Harrington during her eyepatch phase?

I like the 'cats and it took me a while to get used to reading about a gurl but there is a certain grandeur about it when the smallest ship in the fleet is one of these.

Shrike LAC 60,000 tons
(1) Point Defense Laser Cluster
(2) GRASER main armament
(3) Anti-ship Missile Tube
(4) Anti-ship Missile "Revolver" Magazine Cell
(5) Point Defense Missile Tube
(6) Small Craft Hangar
(7) Folding Wing Cutter/Lifeboat
(8) Anti-ship Missile
(9) Sidewall ("Bow Wall") Generator

If you want a realistic, FANTASTIC female character, try Miles' "Mum", Arals' "My dear Commander", Botheris' "My lady".

Cordelia Naismith. If you want something done right, do it yourself. *comes back with the Evil Pretenders head*

The difference in the writing quality in the H. harrington series, and the Miles Vorkosigan series, is as a candle held up to a Massive Gamma-ray Burst.

Could you give me the books and authors? I dont recognise those authors and a basic google didnt find anything (except cordelia naismith which sounds worthwhile, but im still not sure which book to start with)

Sure, I can accept that H.H is unashamedly pulp. I enjoyed it anyway. I hope I wasnt coming across as pretentious or PC. I also like Tank Girl.

Avaunt: Yeah! Lois McMaster Bujold and the Barrayar series is in my top-ten.

Kelvin: one good place to start is "The Warrior's Apprentice," which essentially opens the series.

It's not the chronological first - for that, read "Cordelia's Honor."

The best short she wrote in this series is "Mountains of Mourning."

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

What Yevaud said .

Lois Bujold mcMasters. Start with Shards of Honour. Then come back online and say how excellent* it is so others do too.

*a much over used word, but in this case, perfectly accurate. It EXCELLS its competition.

(Opps, spell Honour the American-as-an-English-dialect way. )

Completely my fault. I was waxing lyrical about the names of Cordelias family (Aral, husband;Miles,Son;Botheri, homocidal manservant/ladies dog . . . . . . umm, best if you read it, to explain Botheri, I am sure I wouldn't do him justice.) and so I didn't serve you very well as a guide. You will have to forgive me. I am perched in front of the machine, with a broken ankle (AGAIN) and high on various yummy drugs/alcohol, have been all week.

Those stories are just so well written, you have no idea. I actually HUGGED MYSELF , honestly, did the ACTUAL gesture of wrapping my arms around my torso, with pleasure derived from the idea of YOU having the opportunity of beginning at the beginning, and meeting Miles and his family/friends/allies/enemies (the which are NOT exclusive sub-groupings. Even if it is your ferverent and much gloated over fantasy to stand over Miles with a branding iron, if HE decides to co-opt you as an ally, your long dwelt on plans count for nought. Before you can say "I HAVE YOU NOW, muahaha. hahahaha. Bwahahahaha" he will talk you into kneeling before him and placing your hands in between his, vassel secundus to Gregor Vorbarr/Miles lever on the world.) and his world.

Such a lucky fellow, you have no idea. And the amazing thing is, Ms McMasters writes other books too. I don't know why she bothers, any book marketer would pay the moon and the stars for another book in the series.

You will have such fun!.

Hmm. Well, all the books can be read as free standing, so i would say probably so.

However, they all do tend to give back story, so I think it might ad a touch of spoiler to the equation when you came to read the others.

However, yes, Mountains, by its setting, would be less likely to spoil the rest, out of all the books.
