But wouldn't these "alpha females" that you describe also be less likely to pass up an opportunity to achieve a historic "first"? Who among them would have passed up a chance to be the first U.S. woman to join the 100 mile high club? I would be willing to bet that one of them, one of the first group, did.

- Ed Kyle

Mullane mentions Judy's statement about the BIG array in his book. She did that on purpose, and it had the entire crew laughing hard. Mullane describes Judy as being one of the smartest astronauts, but also one of the funniest.

- Ed Kyle

I went to work early that morning (I worked at KSC at the time) specifically to see Judy Resnik. (I was a big fan.) I watched her and the rest of the 51L crew do their walk-and-wave from the O&C Building to the crew van. Unfortunately, I also watched the shuttle blow apart a few hours later.

I could tell just by glimpsing her in person for a few moments from afar that Judy was one of those people who lived on a different level from most other humans. She was beautiful inside and out. A top-of-her-class PhD EE for gosh sakes. She was one of those people who energized a room when she entered. She was "alive".

- Ed Kyle

Judy Resnick reminds me a little of a girl I once had a major crush on. And she was every bit as intelligent. Sadly, I never had a chance.

Re: the "cheerleader" photo of the STS-41D crew: Mike Mullane, author of "Riding Rockets", is in the lower left of the photo. In his book, he mentions that the common rumor among the astronaut corps was that he and Ms. Resnik had had an affair (he was married, she was single). He denies the rumors in his book, saying that they were just very close friends.

- Ed Kyle
