Hi all I just jopined and this is a great website. I love talking about space with my friends so here goes.

I have noticed that the LHC is coming on line soon and I was wondering if y'all think the Higgs field wil be detected? I don't think it will myself.

Also, if the theory is accurately framed, wouldn't or couldn't the higgs field also account for what we call gravity?

I think the idea is that the higgs field might be the mechanism that imbues matter with mass, rather than gravity.
Posted by SpeedFreek

yes I know this, but I envision (with no frame of reference for that matter) that very early on the higgs boson particle responsible for the creation of the field might also be similar to that of gravity in some weird intuitive way. So they may not be the same, but the mechanism might be? I haven't seen any reason to think that gravity was around prior to the big bang, or even responsible for it.
