I don't know how long this post will last, but I was considering an Orion 'scope until I received the Summer catolog and compared it to my dogeared Spring issue.
$100 to $170 price increases for the size and capabilty scope I was considering. Meade makes a better quality product anyway and I dare say, so does Celestron.
Sour grapes, a wealthy person would say. A common person like myself will always shop around and compare specs with price. Orion does not deserve the 'props of Meade or Celestron and should not outprice them to boot!!! Too bad Orion.
I'll let you all know about the quality of my new Meade 10 incher when I receive it. I can't wait!
Good observing and no hard feelings, Imaginova.

Thanks for the informative reply! I was considering a Meade 10" goto Schmitt-Newtonian with UHT coatings.
I did not realize that Celestron and Orion were merely nameplates, much like the different makes that are similar in the General Motors family of vehicles.
Do you know who manufactures Meade telescopes, because I was thinking Meade before the Orion catalogs started coming to me via mail. The price increases just irked me, is all, much like gasoline, which is a constant annoyance. Perhaps it is the cost of doing any manufacturing that all companies must raise retail prices when their energy costs go up. Pity. Inflation, I mean. Meade will probably be raising their prices soon, as well.
Anyway, your informative response is a welcome surprise to the usual responses I get when I post my opinions on Cosmoligical theories and accepted science.
As an American, I take free speech for granted, I suppose.
I must make my buying decision soon, but the Meade was always my best and first choice, and I have only recently come into some extra cash to get one.
Have a good evening.

TORRANCE, CA -- April 6, 2005 --
Celestron, one of the world's leading designers and manufacturers of telescopes, binoculars, spotting scopes and microscopes, today announced that SW Technology Corporation, a Delaware company, an affiliate of Synta Technology Corporation ("Synta") acquired all of the outstanding members ownership interests of the company. Synta is a well-known optics manufacturer that has participated in the development of some of Celestron's most popular products, such as the NexStar GT computerized telescope line. Synta has been a Celestron supplier for over 15 years.

Except for a few low end scopes most Meade's are made in the USA. (might be wrong and all are made in Irvine, California)

"Over 90% of the materials and labor required to manufacture Meade 4" through 7" ED apochromatic refractors, 6" through 16" Starfinder reflectors, 3.5" through 16" Schmidt-Cassegrain, Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes, and many other products, are expended in our Irvine factory: these Meade telescopes–including all of the optical systems, coatings, machining, and fabrication of the mechanical and electronic mounting systems–are truly designed and made in the USA."

Personally I like the upgrades that I can do on my Meade LX90 Autostar, Celestron's you couldn't update. (at least at the time I bought back in 2001)

For dobs I used to say buy the Orion but since they went to that IntelliScope I don't anymore (I tell people go with a Discovery scope) unless they are getting the old classic ones.

I haven't used the LXD 75 (I think that's the one you are talking about) but it has the same Autostar as mine.
www.siriuslookers.org

BTW

I used to have Orion send me catalogs to hand out at events (Astronomy Day, GCSP, etc) but have not since 2003. That was the year they came out with the IntelliScope. At the time it was just because I hadn't seen one, now it's because I heard so many bad things about them. Mainly that they are not as smooth as the old classics, that they really were not worth the cost.

I don't like the Orion refractors because of the color, and try to warn people off them. (they have one at the Lowell Obs for public use that I like to compare to my TV85, good for a laugh) NEVERS bought one after I tried to tell him not to. (he never listens to me anyway lol)

I should say this though......any scope is better then no scope........just don't ask me my opinion of Orion.
www.siriuslookers.org

What? Did you say something? I thought I heard my name...

Hey detriech69, if that's you're real name , if you buy an "Achy" refractor of any make you'll likely run into false color of some kind on certain objects - it's almost unavoidable. (Where's crazyeddie?) There's a way around almost anything but it's give and take most of the time. If you can't afford an APO - forget about it and live with what you can afford. But don't forget with a refractor, you can get a correct-image diagonal and spy on your neigbors or watch birds and stuff. You may be lucky enough like me to be able to see clouds for the last 7 months!

I have both Orion & Meade refractors and reflectors. Remember the old saying - 'You get what you pay for'. Orion has done a most outstanding job of making the hobby of astronomy affordable to many whom without them would be sitting at home watching TV instead. Please don't knock them, not in here. Nothing against Wal-Mart - but have you seen the 'scopes they sell from Meade? Buy one of them and tell me what you see.

Hi Alokmohan -

Yes, it has been a while. I still come here a lot but haven't had much to say as of late. Yes, I agree - everybody should obey me regarding telescopes. You are getting sleepy, very sleepy. Pick up your credit card, order a TeleVue NP127 on a Losmandy G-11 with a Gemini System and have it sent directly to my house. Do it - do it now! Hey, I'm just teasing but thanks for your kind words. People should listen to Thom and Crazyeddie - they are my masters.

As I mentioned, I'm interested in the 10" Scmitt-Newtonian go to scope with UHT coatings. Not a refractor. I could never afford a 10" refractor!! Astronomy did a product review after they came out with the line and they faired pretty good. Improvements have been made since, too.
I just know I'm not paying Orion more cash for less scope. Celestron is good if you get their best quality scopes. I wouldn't buy a kid's starter Meade scope at Wally World under ANY cercumstances. Too chintsy and small to be of any use. I just can't afford an 11" GPS scmitt-Cass right now. But it would be a Meade, if I could. If I do get the one I want, I 'll let you know wether I like it or not. Thanx for the input, at any rate....
