Context, I suppose. He could hardly be doing so against Muslims, unless the title was "Geriatric Jones and the Arabs of Doom."

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

NOT Russians mate.

Agents of the Soviet Union.

Russians weren't AGENTS, because they were not as smart as the Balts (Officers) or as ruthless as the Georgians (Commanders) or as expendable and as bloodthirsty as the Bulgarians (Axeman). It is a STORY, a mythology, we don't mean it to be considered truth.

In OUR mythology of the "Russian Empire as Enemy" the RUSSIANS were the drinking men, the political prisoners, and the valiant dour nazi destroyers.

Not agents. It is only a story, son, not to be getting upset about it.

Think of it this way. YES, some westerners do exist that are stupid enough to only know a fictional image of Russia. And this movie will make that sort of westerner MORE stupid and make sure he knows LESS about our cousins of Rodina.

But why would you want STUPID westerners as friends, mate?.

Lots of smart ones will watch the movie as entertainment alone. And know the truth is something else.

Hey, I don't care if every ignorant vor-thief in Russia believes Rambo or Harry Potter is the truth. I know far more SMART people in Russia will know it is fiction, and I only care about the smart ones.

Welcome, cousin, LOTS of room on a Space Web-site for a RUSSIAN friend, after all.

And guess who is playing the "cold-blooded Russian dominatrix": Australian actress Cate Blanchett!

Cate Blanchett's role in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
January 04, 2008 12:00am

HER rise to success may have begun with a Tim Tam commercial, but there is nothing sweet about Cate Blanchett's latest role.

The Oscar-winning actor unleashes her inner sexpot as a cold-blooded Russian dominatrix in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which hits our screens in May.

With a short, sharp hairdo, sleek military suit and a glint of hatred in her eyes, she looks every inch the enemy as Agent Spalko in the fourth instalment of the George Lucas and Steven Spielberg billion-dollar franchise.

While the plot is a closely guarded secret, film writer Erin McWhirter reports Lucas revealed to Vanity Fair magazine that the film is set in 1957 and pits Indy against Russian Cold War Warriors.

Blanchett said working with Spielberg and Harrison Ford was "a riot".

"It was like revisiting my childhood. I ate that series of films alive," she said.(Source)

Cold-blooded Russian dominatrix? That seems a lot like the classic James Bond movies. I hope Lucas and Spielberg aren't getting any inspiration from those. As much as I liked those movies, the whole Cold War spy thriller theme doesn't mesh well with the pulp adventure backdrop of the Indiana Jones franchise. It just worked better with Nazis as villains.

Also, that's a peculiar looking uniform Cate's wearing.

There's some debate about when it exactly started, but tensions between East and West did build up in the years following WW2.

I'd say the blockade of Berlin in June of '48 reasonably marks the start of the Cold War.

-----------------------------------------------------

Ask not what your Forum Software can do do on you,

Ask it to, please for the love of all that's Holy, STOP !

I'd agree. But, many would say it started during WW2.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Wonder if the technological booty of Germany and how it was to be dealed out started it.
One thing you can be sure about is that the Germans are and were great engineers and scientists..

Russians as bad guys yet again. How...original.

Well, it is original, since Spielberg usually prefers Nazis as the go-to villains.

The Soviets were the Nazis of the 50's, if you get right down to it. And they were more interested in the occult/paranormal than people realize, despite their socialist rationalism and atheism.

I'm looking forward to this movie, but not as much as I would have about ten years ago. I was happy with Last Crusade as the final chapter, this seems kind of extraneous. But then, perhaps we should look at it as an encore.

You might say the first battle of the Cold War started in 1918, when British, American, French, Japanese and Canadian forces intervened in the Russian Civil War with the aim of defeating the Bolsheviks.

Now that would make an interesting movie...

Russians as bad guys yet again. How...original.

No, not original at all. Spielberg (& Lucas) may be trying to do what Lucas attempted to do via Star Wars; that is, they may be trying to speak through an existing mythology a la Joseph Campbell. Stereotypes may seem to come readily to hand in such circumstances, even if they are little more than stand-in symbols for abstractions larger and harder to guess at by our poor limited temporal mindsets. Generalities serve political correctness poorly, don't they? Yet we humans are generalists from the DNA on up.

Me: The Soviets were no worse, in their way, than their U.S. counterparts were in theirs. Each strove mightily for the sake of empire, a legacy neither could refuse nor avoid. When we elect to castigate or criticize the Soviets, we only do so at the risk of doing likewise to ourselves. Which does not mean the enemy is not there. The enemy who should most be feared is the enemy within - binding us more closely to our Eastern comrades than either of us might ever have dared realize? The Cold War showed two brothers locked in a death-grip - yet how many of us chose to forget they were brothers?
