The title is kind of topical. It's probably fine.. alot better off than those computers atm even..
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Gonna have to grab it there. Got NASA TV in time, but this darn 'puter's sound is deader than Reaganomics... And, the captioned feed wasn't coming through either.. /sigh

Hate it when I'm not at my own computer.. gonna hug it next time I see it..
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

The media makes it sound like we're oing to see something like the first 10 minutes of the movie Armageddon distruction wise.. It's funny because I bet they have no idea what the names of the people on board are without the cards.

Thats the media for you. Always thinking worst case just sell papers/get viewers.

Funny how the media didnt care about the launch of STS117, but cant get enough of Nasa now they have this crisis

Maybe it will be a Apollo 13 situation.
Something goes wrong, NASA gets attention of the media, NASA solves it, NASA scores good points in the public.

Just a comment from soemone with a metrology background.

They are planning to measure voltages with the scope.
Not the ideal way, but OK maybe.

I wonder when the last time the voltage scale was calibrated, and to what accuracy.

Don't ASSume anything, I want to know the answer

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Could the foolish decision to cancel the U.S. propulsion module end up costing us the space station?

That's along way out there, and besides, if the money ain't there, you have to decide the best use of what you've got.
Reality is a pregnant female dog.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. That's the plan anyway.
Of course, we can't see the sticker and we don't know who did the work.

when I was in the metrology biz, my intials on the sticker meant you've received MUCH more than required.

Adjustment well beyond calibration requirements, to tenths of a percent not 1, 2 or 3 %, then baking and testing and rattling with a retest to make sure the accuracy was stable.

Unfortunately, that is far above and beyond ISO standards, so ain't so standard nowadays.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I havent seen the media, but this is worse than 6A, and 6A was, as on senior flight director put it "not counting challanger, (6a) is the worse crises since Apollo 13".

The meida is probably getting wind of all our absolute worse case, contingency planning. Which si what we do by training. We need to be prepared.

This may be the wrong place to post this comment but I have a suggestion that may already be on the table for nasa but was curious what people thought about it in general. Even though the computer problems have been fixed for now lets say that the worst outcome happens in the near future and the ISS has to be abandoned, there is no way to fix the computers and ultimately it will fall back to earth. I realize this would be a dramatic mission but I think it is worth it, what if we send the shuttle back up at that point to attach boosters to the space station in order to take it to the moon? Obviously this would not be an easy thing and the chances of it landing on the moon in one piece are probably zip, but even if it crashed into the moon at a semi slow velocity and broke into a 1000 pieces would all that junk and metal not be useful to starting a lunar base??? Were talking about 100 billion dollars in equipment with a sq. ft size of a small warehouse. I think that we could defiantly find a way to use that material on the moon to help us with the new bases. Think of it this way, for every 1 lb of equipment that we can use from the wreckage of an otherwise evaporated ISS that is 10 grand that NASA saves in sending it up with the crews in 2020.

Update: Computer problem has been isolated to condensation causing corrision on cables between a command matrix and the computers. Had nothing (as we suspected) to do with the solar arrays. New cables and command matrix going up on the next Progress (Aug 2).
