<p>She sure was a great ship.</p><p>Does anybody know if it is theoretically possible to aero-brake gradually from orbit, so that the stresses of landing would not be extreme? </p><p>I'm thinking it's not possible, because lowering the orbit actually increases velocity. On the other hand, any powered braking would mean steeper entry angle, and thus increased stress loads.</p><p>Blunt end first (with a heatshield) seems to be the only relatively safe method.&nbsp;</p>

I haven't seen that information yet. I suspect the breakup was too high for there to be sufficient oxygen for combustion, but certainly don't know that for sure until a more detailed analysis is released.</p> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p><font color="#000080"><em><font color="#000000">But the Krell forgot one thing John. The bursting tank would have caused the "flash". <br /></p> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>
