I would like to get honest feedback on what folks think of my Mars Settlement stuff. Would you mind taking a few seconds to answer these poll questions? Thank you.

Please select the option which most closely matches your opinion:

Of course, if you'd like to expand on your answer, that would be great.

I have been busy with many other obligations. I am also involved with several other enthusiasts in forming a new organization whose mission will be education of the general public, especially young people, coordination of the efforts of those organizations that we are associated with, and funding of private space efforts. I will keep you informed.
David

Our Solar System must be passing through a Non Sequitur area of space.

I've really enjoyed the threads. I think you've done a great job, and I read them daily to keep up to date. I also went back and looked at the moon thread. I just really wish we were able to take these great ideas and enthusiasm and make it happen. Keep up the good work!

I've read your threads and am still very interested in them. I don't think you're completely nuts. I actually think you have thought the basics out quite well and I admire your enthusiasm. However Imho I don't think you stand a 1 in a billion chance of pulling it off. But realy, don't let my cynism stop you. After all, what do I know.

I've been out of town most of the past two weeks and have had very little time to visit Uplink...finally got some time this weekend to (almost) catch up. I participated (in a very minor way) in the original Mars Mission Thread (lost in The Great Forgetting) and am still very interested in Mars settlement. I'd even be interested in contributing something ($s) to the effort.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. Unsuccessful rebellions, indeed, generally establish the encroachments on the rights of the people which have produced them. An observation of this truth should render honest republican governors so mild in their punishment of rebellions as not to discourage them too much. It is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government."

Thomas Jefferson

Spacester,
I am still waiting for your complete settlement idea. Please post a summary in the financing thread and the settlement development thread. I'm not sure if you have your own idea or you are hoping we can all come up with a viable idea? In either case the threads need additional guidance.

. . . still waiting for your complete settlement idea.

Well Dan, it's all pretty much out there. But what we're badly in need of is a summary. A set of summaries that can then be summarized, actually. That will take some time but I might get it done this week. If someone else would be willing to go thru all three threads in their entirety and provide an objective and impartial summary of the major statements and decisions, that would be fantastic.

But for the most part, my download of the three parts I have to contribute are done. I don't have all the answers, but what I'm offering is

A Settlement-Driven Approach with a set of strategies and goals to make it happen as soon as practical.

A deltaV-based design of space transportation architecture (the interplanetary part), namely the Interplanetary Booster, the second stage cargo landers, second stage manned spin-g ship and third stage surface to orbit and back manned shuttle.

A Financing plan: 39 Million Americans, a robust Affiliates program and Business Activities / Wall Street

Just as an update, there is no way I'm gonna find the time to do a summary within the next week and a half, so anyone else is even more welcome to take a shot at it.

Spacester,

I'm sure you know my feelings on your settlement strategy given my help and attempt to be useful in some way to the threads.

I have posts on many pages, and sometimes, many posts on the same page. I try to sound intelligent, although I'm probably out of my league here.

I guess I could say I like your plan.

Now that you've thrown out what you know, I think we could use guidance to fill in the unknowns in the plan. For instance, in the design thread what do you want us to focus on? Hardware? (habitats, greenhouses) Transportation? (Interplanetary booster & it's payload capabilities, Mars surface to orbit) Operations? (ISRU, ISRU repropping)

Right now, we just seem to be drifting. We've got a large project and much to figure and solve. We should attack it systematically, and we need your guidance to do that.

Also, eventually, when we have it worked out enough, you should create a poll like this for free space. That will be a big test to see how well your plan holds for other people. So far, this poll points strongly to a positive.

Many of the people there most likely have never seen the threads, so that is where the summaries, of the plan and threads, that you have asked for come in. It will have to be explained simply, eloquently, and convincingly. Then you ask, "What do you think?"

I've skimmed through them but I've been so busy with school and things that I really haven't had enough time to look at them as much as I'd like. I really would like to get involved and perhaps now that it is summer I might be able to

I just joined not too long ago, and I'm starting to try to read a lot of threads,
I think some form of settlement on Mars is good, so the threads are important.

spacester, how did you set up a poll?

I have looked at my board controls, and do not see a control panel or option for this?

Most of the other message boards I use, do have this option as part of the new post mode.

But I do not see this here?

So how did you set up a poll?

There are clear instructions in the FAQ section.

BTW. This should be called "Interest in Mars Settlement Threads Poll" when I saw the heading I was expecting questions like "Should we settle Mars?"

good point, sorry, I did the same thing. the questions are rather limited to thread interest.
you're definitely not nuts, though.
I just wish we get started soon, we didn't really need to wait for Bush's
plan.
