here it is, this has to be it:
http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2006/sep/HQ_06317_red_capital.html

NASA sold out lol jk it's interesting. Here's the text:

David E. Steitz
Headquarters, Washington
202-358-1730

Peter Banks
Red Planet Capital, Inc., San Mateo, Calif.
650-522-0085

Sept. 20, 2006
RELEASE: 06-317

NASA Forms Partnership With Red Planet Capital, Inc.

NASA has joined with Red Planet Capital, Inc., San Mateo, Calif., in a partnership to help the agency gain access to new and innovative technologies through the venture capital community.

Red Planet Capital is a nonprofit organization that will establish a strategic venture capital fund for NASA. The purpose of the fund is to provide NASA earlier and broader exposure to emerging technologies. It is designed to promote the future availability of technologies with both government and commercial applications that can meet NASA's future mission requirements. The effort signifies the administration's commitment to creative approaches for promoting innovation in pursuit of America's space agenda.

Red Planet Capital will use venture capital and a NASA investment of approximately $75 million over five years to attract private sector innovators and investors who typically have not done business with the agency.

The principals selected to provide investment fund management are Peter Banks, Co-Founder and Partner of XR Ventures, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Graham Burnette, General Partner of the EA-Capital Fund family; and Jacques Vallee, co-founder of the EA-Capital Fund family, San Mateo. The principals will identify investment opportunities, perform due diligence and manage equity investments in companies. NASA will provide strategic direction and technical input to the fund.

http://asteroid-invasion.blogspot.com

http://www.solvengineer.com/asteroid-invasion.html

> The Griffin Briefing was not the “massive News” that is supposed to be coming./i>

Apparently Shuttle_Guy knows what Shuttle_RTF is holding close to his chest.

/> Hubble Servicing Mission decision meeting at the end of Oct. .../i>

None the less, I found all the points interesting. I wish I had seen the briefing.

This is very good news. It gives NASA early access to private developmental research. I'd like to see it work both ways. For example if NASA has alternate proposals to "Apollo on Steroids" that are more risky, let go of them and allow private enterprise access to NASA developmental research that would otherwise be left on the shelf.

I'm a recovering optimist - things could be better.

What about China joining the ISS. Afterall NASA people are visiting the PRC as we speak. Would be great to see the Zhenzou docked to the ISS.

Would be great to see the Zhenzou docked to the ISS.

Let's wait until we've at least seen the Shenzhou approach and dock with an orbital module from a previous flight (hopefully backing off and repeating several times). It would be really grim to see the Shenzhou attempt to dock to the ISS... and fail catastrophically.

It would be cool but I'd be very suprised, China seem happy to be doing things at their own pace.

That said perhaps we could see a Chinaman on a shuttle flight.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. It's going to be published at 10am Pacific, Thursday, we're told. Although the way this thread is going, nothing short of the second coming of Christ, who then holds a press conference to say he supports the VSE, is going to be required

I'm going with China-ISS, though still have a glimmer of hope for icy-moon-life or Mars-life. Those berries still look like things, not rocks...

Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

>"I believe we now know what the massive news was, see my previous post."

If that's "massive" news then I suggest Shuttle_RTF looks at a dictionary. That word most certainly doesn't mean what he thinks it means.

Those berries still look like things, not rocks...

thanks for saying that, I feel eminently underqualified to go there in an M&L post

I'm a recovering optimist - things could be better.

Chris said, over at NSF in the lunar lander thread that this "massive news" is not STS related...

Does this mean that the private sector will be able to invest in NASA?

Rae

> I'm going with China-ISS/i>

I think a China deal would be really cool. ISS construction/completion is pretty much a done deal at this point, IMHO, and bringing China in as a partner at this stage would be cool.

However, something of this magnitude would probably be decided at the political level. I am sure Congress and the President would not be too excited about Griffin making such deals without their explicit endorsement ahead of time.

Before a major Apple conference the rumors are spectacular, and in the end, reality (as exciting as it might have been) is a little bit of a disappointment compared to the hyped expectations.

Still... as I squirm in my seat with all sorts of visions dancing in my head, the next half hour is going to be a tough wait...
