Now the NAC is examining the southern (?) pole at resolution of ~ 500 M/pixel from an altitude of /> 18000 km (Edit, added a missing 0 <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" /> ) Edit 2, now moving past the equator toward the north (?) pole. I suspect they are waitong to image the north pole with as much unimaged territory as possible. Hence the south to north path of the mosaic. Yes, those graphics have north at the top, unlike Astronomy maps of the Moon, which as you know usually show south at top to match a telescope view. The NAC mosaic is about to cross the Hermian equator from south to north. Just gemmed up a bit from the Planetary Society site.

From now to 22:14 UT, the departure NAC movie will see Mercury shrink to 200 pixels.

At that time, MESSENGER will have receeded to 65,345 KM from Mercury.

My own perspective: If you have not all fallen to sleep yet.

The Mercury Encounter 2 on; Monday 6th October 2008, will have Mercury facing the
other way. By the end of that encounter, between Mariner 10 & MESSENGER, we will
have a 92% global map of Mercury.

Assuming the imaging tonight was successful (cannot see why not), we will still have
an about 75% global coverage of Mercury.

For me personally the first NAC Mosaic taken post closest approach will be the most
important. That mosaic will show a huge swathe of poorly seen & unimaged terrain &
will be able to see if the outer ring of the suspected Skinakas Basin exists.

The Caloris Basin will be seen at an oblique angle near the limb.

Also we will see the distribution & orientaion of the giant scarps (if they exist on
the newly imaged terrain) & see
how they relate to those, seen by Mariner 10 & not only that, we will have seen enough, to
determine the general geophysical nature of Mercury.

Did Mariner 10 show us haw Mercury is generally or did Mariner 10 miss giant
volcanoes, canyons, etc, because they were on the night side then??

The images taken tonight will contain that answer.

Crucial gravity data would also have been obtained along with magnetospheric data. This
will be compared to Mariner 10 data, thus giving us a more complete overview
of Mercury's internal makeup & possible evolution.

The Wide Angle Camera mosaics also contain spectral data, thus we will have the
first high resolution mineral maps of Mercury "I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. It was extremely large with respect to the overall size of Io and crescent shaped. It seemed unbelievable that something that big had not been visible before".
