The Naval Ordnance Test Unit (NOTU) survived the BRAC today. They voted 8-0 to keep it open, citing the fact that the Cape provides a safe place for the Subs during test operations, and that it is also easier/safer access to deep waters for tests.

The Pentagon had originally recommended that NOTU be moved up to Kings Bay, GA, which is where the Atlantic Ohio-Class sub fleet is stationed.

FYI: ICBM and FBM launches make up for greater than 50% of all of the launches that have occured from the Cape.

Some more history there too.

The cape is also used for torpedo shoots especially when the navy did excercises off the coast of Puerto Rico and such. The range is south east of there...

They have torpedo retrievers and a clean up facilityhere as well.

It's plausible. I mean, if I were a nomadic indigenous person dependent on whatever I could find in the wilderness and I just happened upon a crashed airplane, I'd make use of the bits too!

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

I spoke with an old timer about the "Old Days" at the Cape. He brought up one launch they had that turned south and kept on going. No one knew where it went, some thought it kept going until it reached South America. I think it was a Snark flight!

Another guy told me that they fixed problems with the MAce and Matidor with cloths hangers and bailing wire. There only goal was to fix and fly!
