NASA commemorates Juneteenth with historic view from space

The Emancipation Proclamation issued after the Battle pf Antietam only freed those slaves in the territory under the Union Army's control. Hence, the Union's winning the Civil War was a paramount condition for freedom. By 1865, freed slaves comprised the second largest military contingent in the Union Army. The 13th and 14th amendments to the U.S. Constitution formally ended slavery. I highly recommend viewing Ken Burns' "The Civil War" which by the way is considered the first modern war along with the Franco-Prussian War. History to be accurate and precise needs to be researched.

I used MS BING and found this about slaves freed by the Union Army.

"U.S. Grant also had several slaves, who were only freed after the 13th amendment in December of 1865. When asked why he didn’t free his slaves earlier, Grant stated “Good help is so hard to come by these days.” Contrarily, Confederate General Robert E. Lee freed his slaves (which he never purchased — they were inherited) in 1862!"
