This is to get cargo to the ISS.

This HTV is untested and so is there rocket H-2B to put it into orbit.

I would like to see them use the Europe's ATV which is currently docked to ISS now.

This is tested and works great.

The only problem with Europe's ATV is it uses the Russia's docking system only.

Whoops...first those rocketeers in Alabama and their Jupiter thing. Now this.

It's curious that both Reuters and a Japanese news outlet reported this...not that that means it couldn't be "counter-factual."

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/features/science/20080720TDY01305.htm

And of course Nasawatch is all spun up about it, not that that takes much.

http://www.nasawatch.com/archives/2008/07/gutting_cots.html

I wonder if someone put together a front outfit called, say, HTV Americas, if they would consider it a "domestic?"

A lot of aerospace gets done this way, including a good deal of the Boeing 777 composite materials being provided by Toray Composites America, which is actually a Japanese company based in Kobe.

Last time I checked the Japanese were ISS pertners.

***

With a Democrat Congress holding the purse strings how long do you think such an "oursourcing" would last in the inevitablke hearings such a move would generate, especially in an election year?

I give it <5 minutes.

Well, Democrat or Republican, it all depends on how many of our far-sighted representatives are lobbied (read: owned) by whatever consortium the hypothetical HTV deal is sponsored by.

Also, this is far too creative a solution for NASA to pursue. The story is likely a hoax, hopeful thinking, or the result of a slow news day in Japan. It was a public holiday in Japan today, after all.

***
