Btw, they have displayed this picture on SDC
http://www.space.com/imageoftheday/iod.html

as picture of the day.
It's probably my lacks in English but I cannot make sense of the caption. Is this a real picture? A composition of Io on one hand and Europa on the other? or a superimposition in different colors?

It is in a sense a real picture. It's a composite of several images.

The moons are not in that position at any one time relative to NH.

It's not really clear how "real" the greenish color is, since they didn't describe the derivation of the color.

It was decribed as a "pretty picture" rather than a scientific one.

It is pretty

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Sure it is. But it's always more satisfactory when it's "real", or as real as possible.

I hope we will get in 2015, in addition to enhanced cold pictures, "real" pictures of the plutonian subsystem members.

"The moons are not in that position at any one time relative to NH. "

But I believe that they were. The two moons are not moved closer by editing images. IIRC, the image is based on a single image of the two moons, which happened to line up on the far side of Jupiter at an instant in the New Horizons flight through the Jovian system. The colors, particularly the image of Io, are likely composited from several other images. The dynamic range between the sunlit crescent of Io and the night side, in addition to the Tvashtar plume, are beyond the range of a single image, IIRC.

That image was in fact requested a long time before the fly past. It was part of an on line competition i believe.

The winner did work out the orbits and gave the New Horizons team the time and date during the encounter when this line up would happen.

That particular line up did occur during the Jupiter encounter.

It is real in every sense. Exposure times and colour balance would of course make the scene differ from that of it hitting the human eye. That is true though of most space images.

"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Thanks Anthmartian,

then if only the colors have been a little bit rearranged, I 'll dowload it...

Anthmartian and my previous statements were correct, which you can verify here:

http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/gallery/sciencePhotos/pages/101607.html

Io and Europa Meet Again

This beautiful image of the crescents of volcanic Io and more sedate Europa is a combination of two New Horizons images taken March 2, 2007, about two days after New Horizons made its closest approach to Jupiter. A lower-resolution color image snapped by the Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera (MVIC) at 10:34 universal time (UT) has been merged with a higher-resolution black-and-white image taken by the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) at 10:23 UT. The composite image shows the relative positions of Io and Europa, which were moving past each other during the image sequence, as they were at the time the LORRI image was taken.

The picture was one of a handful of the Jupiter system that New Horizons took primarily for their artistic (rather than scientific) value. This particular scene was suggested by space enthusiast Richard Hendricks of Austin, Texas, in response to an Internet request by New Horizons scientists for evocative, artistic imaging opportunities at Jupiter.

This image was taken from a range of 4.6 million kilometers (2.8 million miles) from Io and 3.8 million kilometers (2.4 million miles) from Europa. Although the moons appear close together in this view, a gulf of 790,000 kilometers (490,000 miles) separates them. Io’s night side is lit up by light reflected from Jupiter, which is off the frame to the right. Europa's night side is dark, in contrast to Io, because this side of Europa faces away from Jupiter.

I am just quickly chiming in here, during an all too infrequent & brief visit,
due to computer problems (using a work one during break).

That's correct.

We are seeing much of the Jupiter facing hemisphere on Io in Jupitershine, so from
Jupiter, Io would have appeared as a slim crescent.

Europa on the otherhand, from Jupiter, would have been at least a Gibbous, nearly full.

But from the location of New Horizons, we are seeing both Io & Europa from a similar viewpoint,
hence similar phases.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Isn't that incredible!
I recently wrote to NASA after they discovered huge lakes of liquid methane on Titan reminding them they could use Titan as a fuel stop to refuel and go further out into space. This was conjectured a few years ago and now has become fact.

Patrick Moore told of imagined lakes in Titan.I hope Nasa is not managing after reading Moore. At least Patrick saw it much ahead:saint patrick.

Here's an APOD I missed
Jupiter's clouds from New Horizons

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Hi MeteorWayne,

Thank you very much.

I cannot see everything, everywhare so I am highly appreciative of this help.

Yes I agree MeteorWayne that is truly stunning, I know that was on the official release,
but I too missed it on APOD, where they seem to be able to enlarge released images, without sacrificing detail.

I have downloaded APOD image & it is larger & more detailed than the one on the official
New Horizons site.

The camera used was the Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera (MVIC). The cloud bands
shown here, are approaching the evening terminator.

From left to right, about two thirds of the way across on your link, that peculiar 'rippling effect'
is clearly visible, thought to be from gigantic storms, deep below the visible cloudtops
making themselves apparent in the low Sun.

Another idea are strong winds, just above the visible cloudtops, causing waves, similar to
waves on Earth, but these are atmospheric waves on a gargantuan scale.

A link here shows said ripples taken by LORRI.

Another LORRI view here of Ripples.

RIPPLES & text from APL.

APL enhanced view of Atmospheric Ripples.

Cropped & enlarged ripples in colour from MVIC from link provided by MeteorWayne.

So once again MeteorWayne, thank you very, very muc

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world.
