4) If yes to all of the above, we can proceed to an analysis of the consequences of this hypothesis.

Why is this so difficult?

Answer: because 2PC is actually correct, and you can't accept that is even a possibility. The moment you acknowledge the hypothesis and start evaluating the consequences, I've got you. :)

And you know it. Or at least you know it enough to be sufficiently fearful of it to have let this discussion descend to the current level of absurdity.

Write everything that you have to say about the nature of time in your theory. When you're done, I'll repeat my last question.

There is no point in you repeating your question until you've answered my three questions:

1) Do you understand the 2PC hypothesis about the nature of time?
2) Do you accept it is scientifically and logically possible?
3) If not, why not?

Time in 2PC:

Two Phases of Reality in 2PC

  1. Phase 1: Pre-Collapse Quantum Phase
    • Timeless and pre-physical.
    • Consists of an evolving superposition of potential histories, consistent with the full wavefunction of the universe.
    • No determinate events, no real "past," only potentiality.
    • Structured by coherent mathematical possibilities, but not yet actualized.
  2. Phase 2: Post-Collapse Classical Phase
    • Begins at the point of psychegenesis—the emergence of a conscious observer (e.g., LUCAS) whose internal decisions necessitate the resolution of quantum uncertainty.
    • Collapse occurs via the Quantum Convergence Threshold (QCT), selecting a single consistent history.
    • This collapse brings into being definite events and with them, a directional, flowing time.
    • Time here is retrospectively constructed, not pre-existing, and is stabilized via mechanisms like the Quantum Zeno Effect (QZE).

Key Features of Time in 2PC

  • Emergent, not fundamental: Time arises only after the collapse event that marks the transition from Phase 1 to Phase 2.
  • Retrospective Actualization: The "past" is not fully real until collapse; it is backfilled as a consistent history.
  • Time Begins with Collapse: What we call the Big Bang is not the origin of the universe, but the origin of actualized, physical time.
  • Subject-Dependent: Time emerges with and for the conscious subject; it is co-arising with observation and participation.
  • Temporal Coherence Maintained by QZE: Conscious attention and memory (via ARC's Θ(t) function) stabilize temporal flow and identity, producing a persistent, coherent stream of experience.

Analogy

Think of the pre-collapse universe as a library of unwritten books, and the collapse as the act of selecting and writing one coherent story. Time is the narrative sequence that emerges only once the story begins to be written—from the moment the "author" (a conscious agent) begins to act.

In Summary

In 2PC, time is not something in which events happen; it is something that happens when events become real.
It begins not with the Big Bang, but with the collapse into actuality—the emergence of consciousness that selects from among many possibilities and, in doing so, brings time into being.

I have uploaded a new version of that paper. This time it says what it should have said in the first place.

The Hubble tension—a stark discrepancy between early- and late-universe measurements of the
Hubble constant—has emerged as a crisis for the standard ΛCDM model. Efforts to resolve this
tension through modified physics or exotic fields implicitly accept the ontological validity of early-
universe inferences. We challenge this assumption. In this paper, we develop the framework of
Two-Phase Cosmology (2PC), in which reality undergoes a phase transition from a pre-physical
quantum superposition to a post-collapse classical universe, triggered by the emergence of
conscious observers. We show that 2PC (1) eliminates the need for inflation, (2) dissolves the
ontological status of ΛCDM before observation, and (3) reframes early-universe "measurements" as
retrospective model fits rather than physical detections. Consequently, the Hubble tension is not a
physical problem requiring resolution, but a philosophical confusion to be dissolved. We end by
proposing a new observational program rooted in a 2PC-compatible cosmology, reframing
cosmological inference as the reconstruction of a stabilized post-collapse reality.
And bizarrely, I just got a notification that marcin made a post "in a moment". Weird time stuff.

Does one of these potential histories describe a continuous process with its unlikely events resulting in the emergence of the brain and the whole body of LUCA, since the beginning of the universe?
Yes. It also contains everything else in the cosmos which needs to remain coherent with that timeline at the point of its eventual collapse. This is *highly* fine-tuned. The fine-tuning doesn't just need to involve the unlikely events that lead to LUCAS, but everything else has to stay coherent too, and everything that needs to happen to make that possible actually does happen. It does not need to contain irrelevant timelines, bits of the cosmos which become causally separated or decohered, or anything else that will eventually be "pruned" at the phase shift. But if LUCAS needs it, it has to be in there, and it will be in there regardless of how improbable that might be.

This has major consequences. For example, the early universe needs to be exceptionally low-entropy, uniform and flat....

If the history branch leading to LUCA was one of the branches in the multiverse, then it didn't need LUCA to retrocause itself and retrospectively choose or shape this branch.

In phase 1 all of those histories just exist, timelessly. None of them can be shaped, because "shaping" requires change. It is meaningless in the absence of time. They do not "happen". Nothing happens until phase 2 gets going, because phase 2 ends unitary (MWI-like) evolution of the wavefunction. Phase 2 involves an ever-changing "now", where things get "shaped" by conscious participation.

Phase 1 is still like that now, but in lots of much smaller bits, because it [the present and the retrodicted past] is continually being "reshaped" by every conscious animal on this planet.

Think of phase 1 as being like MWI, except there aren't any minds and everything is just literally a mathematical structure. There is no spacetime -- just its noumenal-quantum-informational equivalent.

Is the pure mathematical structure of the phase 1 enough to shape the brain and the body of LUCA, since there are no brains or even spacetime in this phase?

Absolutely (though with the understanding of what "shape" means here...there is nothing actually changing).

This fits with Thomas Nagel's arguments in Mind and Cosmos. He claimed that materialism is incoherent and therefore we must rethink naturalism. He concludes (after very careful argument) that the only reasonable non-theological explanation for how consciousness evolved was teleologically. He says we need to be looking for teleological natural laws. My proposal replaces his teleological laws with a structural system which looks like teleology from phase 2.

There can be no brains in phase 1. It is the appearance of brains which causes the system to cross the threshold into phase 2.

And there was no biology, chemistry, or the "real physics" from the phase 2 before the LUCA was formed, correct?

There was only the structural equivalent of those things. The phase 1 timeline, just "before" the phase shift (or that is how it looks from inside phase 2), contained all of the information needed to "render" (if you like) the cosmos into existence. But it didn't actually exist in a phase 2 sense, and could not do so until a brain appeared which was capable of making a decision.

It might help, at this point, to return to this: https://www.ecocivilisation-diaries.net/articles/void-emergence-and-psychegenesis

1. The Initial Condition: An Unstable Void Containing All Mathematical Structure

The foundational assumption is that reality begins not with something, but with instability: what Stéphane L’Heureux-Blouin calls the unstable void, defined formally by the nonzero magnitude of a fluctuation parameter: ∥δV∥ ≠ 0.This void is not an empty space or a physical vacuum. It is pre-physical—a kind of “meta-background” from which all consistent mathematical structures can emerge. You can think of it as a formless equilibrium-breaking substrate whose disequilibrium permits the expression of structure. Because there are no spatiotemporal constraints yet, this void “contains” all coherent mathematical forms—all sets of internally consistent mathematical relationships, which includes the totality of all physically possible universes, histories, and processes. This is equivalent to a strong form of Mathematical Platonism: any logically coherent structure exists, in a timeless and spaceless way, within the Platonic realm of formal possibility.

2. The Platonic Multiverse: Superposition of All Possible Histories

Within the unstable void, every mathematically valid cosmos exists in superposition. Not “in parallel universes” in the physical sense, but as ideal structures with complete internal logic:

  • Some correspond to universes with no stars,
  • Some to universes with strange physics,
  • Some to our own universe, including the entire history of our cosmos from Big Bang to Earth’s early biosphere.
These are not happening—they simply exist as coherent totalities in the Platonic sense. There is no time or change yet, only possibility.

3. Emergence of a Critical Mathematical Structure: The Pre-Decision Cosmos

At some point within this Platonic ensemble, one particular structure contains the full history of our universe up to the Ediacaran Period—just before the Cambrian Explosion. Within this structure, a complex multicellular animal arises: the first bilaterian organism with a centralised nervous system. Crucially, this organism’s nervous system models not only the environment but itself within it. This means the structure now encodes an internal self-representation capable of decision-making based on predictive modeling. This is a computationally significant phase transition: the first time in any mathematical structure that something internal to the structure is capable of simulating possible futures and choosing among them.

We denote this animal "LUCAS" (Last Universal Common Ancestor of Sentience).

4. The Incoherence of Infinite Branching: The Quantum Convergence Threshold

At this point, the mathematical structure reaches a critical instability. Why? Because the organism can, in principle, model multiple future outcomes and choose between them. If it were to continue in line with unitary evolution (as in the Many Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics), then it would have to realize all possible continuations. But true choice excludes alternatives—a decision that includes all options is not a decision. This creates a problem of internal inconsistency within the mathematical structure. You now have a situation where:

  • The system encodes an agent capable of making real decisions,
  • But it cannot evolve forward in time without branching into incoherence unless it collapses into one outcome.
This is the core insight of Capanda’s Quantum Convergence Threshold (QCT): certain complex systems (especially those with reflexive modeling) force a convergence of possibilities at decision points. The coherence of the mathematical structure itself depends on a collapse, which cannot be derived from within the structure itself.

5. The Role of the Void: Collapse from Outside the Structure

So how is this impasse resolved? The resolution must come from outside the structure. The unstable void—which exists prior to and beyond all structures—is invoked at this point as a meta-ontological selection mechanism. The mathematical structure effectively “refers back” to the void to resolve the undecidable moment. A selection is made—not by the structure, but by a deeper logic that incorporates the entire landscape of possible structures. The void, in other words, determines how the structure is extended. This is not physical causation but formal resolution: the only way for the structure to continue coherently is to embed within it a mechanism of selective continuation—a mechanism that looks like free choice from inside the system. This moment is what I call psychegenesis: the origin of consciousness as the point where the structure is forced to become self-selecting, through recursive invocation of the void.

6. Transition to Phase Two: Emergence of Spacetime and Actualization

After psychegenesis, the structure can no longer evolve as a timeless mathematical object. It must now evolve through a sequence of selections—each of which resolves an undecidable point by invoking the void again. These recursive invocations create:

  • An arrow of time, since each decision constrains future possibility.
  • The emergence of spacetime, as the geometry necessary to mediate sequences of self-consistent choices.
  • The collapse of the superposition, since only one branch is extended at each decision point.
This defines the two-phase cosmology:

  • Phase 1: timeless superposition of all mathematical possibility (pre-psychegenesis).
  • Phase 2: temporally ordered actualization of one specific structure through embedded void-initiated selection (post-psychegenesis).
Consciousness, in this view, is not a byproduct of physical evolution but the formal requirement that allows a particular structure to become dynamically consistent through recursive invocation of the unstable void.

There was no time in your timeless phase 1, so it has no timeline. No physical, chemical, and biological process led to the formation of LUCA's brain. In your theory it appeared like the Boltzmann brain, but with the whole body and the whole universe. Your universe started from LUCA and everything before it is a story that we're telling ourselves.

Is there something else that you'd like to explain about the nature of time in your theory?
