WEll, at least in the book, Mr Clarke has his monkey's living cave life . . . three million years ago; well, no, Homo Erectus started this maybe what three hundred thousand years ago?!

I suppose one could use some imagination with todays knowledge of Homo Erectus instead of the Australopithacines Clarke was probably meaning to portray in 2001. Still, three million years is pushing it as far as cave life goes for a portrayall of human evolution!

IIRC, human ancestors can be dated back as far as 2 million years but in any case, our knowledge is only as good as our current database and that data base is far from complete.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen...and those who do not know what happened.
