Periodic Table of Deep-Sky Objects

Dec 8, 2020

I recently created an infographic called “The Periodic Table Of Deep Sky Objects” that I think will interest a few of you. It ranks messier objects by difficulty of viewing (with an 8-inch telescope) and it also indicates the best season to observe said objects from the northern hemisphere.

This ranking is a personal opinion and I understand some objects might seem easier or harder to see for other people. The goal here is to provide some guidance to people starting out in stargazing.

How to read the cells:
  • Top: viewing season
  • Middle: the Messier object number.
  • Bottom: the apparent magnitude of the object.
Note: The objects are also classed from dimmest (bottom) to brightest (Top). Follow the white line between the cells.
