At the south pole itself. 90 degrees south. From there, the South Celestial Pole is at the Zenith (straight up). South polar star is a dim object called Sigma Octantis.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Standing directly at the south pole would be an interesting place; every direction is North! Also, if you have an actual pole at the exact location, you can run around the pole, and have technically made a trip around the world!

Techies: We do it in the dark.

"Put your hand on a stove for a minute and it seems like an hour. Researchers at the South Pole have a tradition called the 300 Club. You get in the sauna, strip off all your clothes except for socks and a neck gaiter, then dash out and run around the South Pole (so that, in theory at least, you pass through 24 time zones) before dashing back into the sauna to put your clothes back on. The idea is that as you go from the steaming hot sauna into the waaaaay subzero temps outside, you experience a 300 degree drop in temperature.

It must get very boring cooped up with a bunch of other researchers for six months.....

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Hi CalliArcale. That is pretty funny & COLD!! BRRR!!

Hi weeman,

It is true, you can pass all through the time zones in a few steps.

A while back, David Bellamy here in the UK, went to the North Pole from Baffin Island, via Ellesmere Island in a small plane, as part of a BBC series about the Arctic.

Located the true north pole, stuck a stick in the ice, then placed his gloved finger on it & stated that it was Midnight where he was standing (this was mid May, so it was 24 hours daylight & because it was still only Spring, the ice had not really begun to thin yet). He then proceded to walk in an counter clockwise direction, keeping his finger on the pole. After a few steps, it was 6:00 AM, then a few more: 12 NOON, then a few more, 6:00 PM & after a few more, back to Midnight!!

It was really funny to think like that.

Every single direction was south from there.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world.
