He insinuated you should be taken out and shot??? Okay, a public announcement here, folks. That sort of thing is not nice at all and is not allowed. It's harder for us to find out about it in PMs, but it's no less forbidden.

In reply to:

Walter Alvarez is not responsible for the ideas of Raup and Sepkoski, Nutty Nancy, or the Niburu crowd, (or his father, for that matter, at least for the previous prize {could the Nobel Committee be afraid of the appearance of nepotism?}) any more that I am responsible for the ideas of BruceGagnon, even if I have one idea that is parallel to his.

That's very well said. It is sad that "Planet X" activates the bozo-flux filters for so many folks now, and it's all because the whole concept was taken over by some really nutty folks. I don't think Nemesis or Planet X actually exists, although it's quite possible that new studies by Spitzer may find something big out there. At those distances, IR surveys of the sky will have the best luck of spotting something.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

That is an unsubstantiated accusation that he made to me in a private message. My comment was in a PM about others who were known communists that took over VVAW, or knew they had and did nothing about it, and who accepted financial support from the USSR and Vietnam to fund anti-war activities. These are documented facts corroborated by FBI counter-soviet-intel files released after the cold war, as well as the autobiography of General Vo Nguyen Giap.

That Mike Emmert had anything to do with VVAW has absolutely nothing to do with my previously private statement, which I specifically did NOT say that he personally should be taken out and shot, and I object in the STRONGEST POSSIBLE terms to his accusation that I did, and demand that he be reprimanded for making such a false accusation. Such statements are slanderous and libelous, especially given that this forum is a public record, and demand that these accusations be removed from the forum.

What about the case of a Brown Dwarf system which has several "Asteroid" sized objects in orbit around it. Would we then call these objects "Planets"?

If they [the asteroids] are circular, then yes.

And what about the case of a really massive star or black hole with several suns in orbit and an "Asteroid belt" made up of debris the size of our Earth? Would the objects orbiting the other stars in the system be called planets or moons?

Every planet that does not orbit another planet, is a planet.

Different types of star systems will require new types of planet catagories and they won't be the same as we use in our own Solar System.

We really have no idea of the possible configurations of Solar Systems that are out there.

Yeah, but same for all is that they are planets.

I'd prefer not to drag this thread any farther off topic, so I will keep this brief. I have now seen the PM in question. I will not repost it without permission. mlorrey said that the people running the VVAW should be shot. Unfortunately, mikeemmert evidently considers himself to be one of those people, or identifies with them closely enough that he felt threatened. I realize you did not intend to include him in that group, as you do not consider him to be one of the objectionable people you were referring to, but the end result was the same. It is unfortunate that he did not understand that and took offense.

A word of advice to all: be very very careful when suggesting that a group of people should be shot. It can get misunderstood and lead to unhappiness all too quickly. On the flipside of that, try not to overanalyze what the other person says. Don't go out of your way to take offense when someone expresses strong dislike for people you respect. And when someone says something that really offends you, consider whether or not you may have misunderstood.

And mlorrey, I do apologize for not taking more care with this situation. I should never have posted this warning publicly. I think I tarnished your reputation, and that was entirely undeserved. I am very sorry for that.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
