No, we have not. You may think so, but the Chinese do not, never will, and never forget that.

We all trade together? Not fairly. Look at your trade deficit. They are scamming you because you are naive today already.

Hey! Thanks for illustrating the point that I was trying to make!
It's precisely that kind of thinking, on both sides that is screwing this world up, "Cain't trust them Chinese! Never can, never will!"
What the hell?
This mentality is also why other posters here are advocating homesteading instead of a purely scientific mission.
Sure it would be hard, dangerous, lot of work, with few comforts at first, but the to be free of people that have nothing to say and still insist on saying the same old rubbish, would be well worth it!
As for our trade deficit, Australia has had successive governments that pissed away opportunities to let this country do more than mining and farming.
That being said there is an enormous potential here in Australia to be a major player in an International Space Agency.
Anyway, thanks "Booban" for illustrating my point.
You all go have a real nice day!

Well, they are a communist military dictatorship. Although I admit that we work with the Russians sometimes. I have no problem with China also going to Mars, on their own, but we need at least one jurisdiction on Mars where there is individual freedom.

Well I think we need both. The government missions should be "Lewis and Clark" type things, and there should also be private ventures going there. A homesteader, though, would technically be a group that is going there with their own money.

No, its your fanciful mentality that is screwing the world up because you won't accept how it works. Evil dictatorships have gained tremendously because people like you can't accept that they are not as naive as you. Hitler got Sudentenland, Stalin got East Berlin, N. Vietnam got S. Vietnam just because people like you thought everyone could play fair.

You are so right, and so wrong.

The US borrows 1/3 of it's federal budget because we don't want to pay for what we get, that is greed. Every nation pursues it's own interest. The US perpetrated the largest germ warfare experiment ever by intentionally propagating the small pox epidemic that wiped out the Native American, then we systematically exterminated all resistant natives until their population was low enough to place them in death camps. Eventually we started feeling bad about the death camps, so we turned them into ghettos. Why? It was in the best interest of the United States, and we would do it again.

Trust me Stalin, Hitler, and Pol Pot where amateurs, God Bless America!

In the end it is about who has the most marbles, and who gets to write the history books. If the US does not lead someone else will. No nation wants a "fair fight", we all want to be the dominate force in the world.

Unfortunately the US has became vain, fiscally irresponsible, militaristic, and bureaucratic. We have became the modern version of the nation we rebelled against.

I seriously hope that the US seriously funds a space program, and get's it financial house in order, because I really don't want to read what the Chinese text books, printed in 2060 will say about us.

Re: National Aspect of Buzz Aldrin's Mars Plan

While I sm not noted here as a conservative by any means, I must agree with Boris. While the treatment of the American Indians by the advancing western world certainly is not one to take pride in, neither does it in any way compare to the dictatorships that spacexULA compared it to. In fact the reservations that the Indians were eventually forced onto were for the most part already in lands the Indians themselves had already possessed, and knew how to live on. Unlike the actual Death Camps of such as Adolph Hitler, they were not meant to just kill off all the American Indians. And the same with the Gulags of Joseph Stalin.

In fact, I am now personally glad to see the American Indians getting some degree of revenge by building Casino's on those lands that are not only for the most part tax free (at least as far as the federal government is concerned), but are profitable in taking the "White Man's" money from him! Of course, that is only those white people that are stupid enough to go and gambol anyway! And I am not only too poor to do that , I am not stupid enough to do it either!

However, I am glad to see the American Indian getting something back here. But I have never, and I never will just hang my head in some kind of guilt over what was done here in this country, as it was what has been done throughout history by mankind in general.

It is kind of like those American blacks that want some kind of reparations because their ancestors were slaves. If we were to carry that kind of thinking to its ultimate conclusion then we would all have to attack Italy immediately and take everything that is there to spread around the world. For, in ancient history, if you were not a Roman citizen you were by definition a slave! The greatest slave empire the world has ever witnessed was the Roman Empire. Which was of course centered in Rome in Italy, so of course the Italians owe us all! Which is stupidly ridiculous!

People have been conquering and creating misery for other people, who have been conquered and miserable from the time of Cain and Able in the Bible, over six thousand years ago! So just live with it!

I know this is a far more conservative viewpoint than I am noted for on these boards, but as I have said before on many occasions I am neither a liberal nor a conservative. It depends on the issue at hand. And when it comes to the new views of history, (I think it is called revisionist history) I do not in general go along with it at all!

By the way, long before Western Civilization conquered the Americas from the Native peoples here, those native peoples both murdered and enslaved each other by the millions! Many of those people were indeed intrinsically noble, but many were also some of the most savage people the world has ever seen at the same time. People are unfortunately people, regardless of what popular mythology would have them be!

And I wish Peace and Happiness to ALL people, regardless of History Past!

And if we do not get off of this planet, and become a true space faring civilization, then there WILL BE NO history for future generations to write about anyway, as mankind will have become as extinct as the dinosaurs!! :x

It was a thread in Missions and Launches but then deteriorated in to nation bashing. So MeteorWayne moved the trash to a place that would appreciate it to its fullest.

Maybe they should rename "Free Space" to something more appropriate, like maybe "Cesspool" or "Garbage Heap" or "Waste Dump."

Buzz Lightyear's plan to go to mars is wonderful, but it would be easier with the giant ship from

DISTRICT 9. Man some cool alien bugs, blow like popcorn when you heat them up.

Yeah, sorry about that. With the Hazmat suit required to move stuff to Free Space, it sometimes comes out a little ugly.

I'll try and find an earlier post that might help provide some context.

Of course it would help that if those posting in M&L threads would stick to the Missons and Launches topic, and start a new thread in the appropriate forum when they go off on a rant... OMG What am I thinking????

The fumes must be getting to me :)

I think that's reasonable request, even in Free Space. Prove it, or admit that you can't and retract the statement SpacexULA

I'll second that Jim. What IS this thread about? I haven't read anything pertinent to "Buzz Aldrin's Mars Plan", just a bunch of mostly fallacious history on the exploitation of the world by the Roman Empire and the "white man". What gives?

Re: National Aspect of Buzz Aldrin's Mars Plan

I read the Popular Mechanics piece regarding Aldrin's Mars Plan (click here) and can see why that would be a worthy 'Missions & Launches' topic. I'm just guessing but I think the Chinese were brought into the discussion and things just went south from there. It's a shame space missions can't rise above geopolitical rivalries and mistrust - and I'm not just talking about forum scrums.
