Push of gravity

I was just thinking about another way of thinking about gravity. Suppose, instead of being pulled toward a massive object like the Earth or the Sun, gravity was really space itself PUSHING you toward massive objects. The closer you get to the object, the stronger the push. Sort of like the deeper you go in the ocean, the higher the pressure due do the water above you pushing on you.<br /><br />I don't suppose it makes any difference one way or the other... <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

Consider 2 scenarios:<br /><br />A. I am standing on a sphere of styrofoam, 1 mile across.<br /><br />B. Gravity that pushes....hmm. sounds theoretical but it wouldn't make sense in a way that gravity pulls in all directions. Think of it this way:<br /><br />Why does the fish at the bottom of the ocean not get crushed by the immense pressure? Because the fish has equal pressure inside and out and so this is normal for it.<br /><br />Now consider space just like that. Space exerts enormous pressure, but in all directions so we don't feel it. Matter is a hole in space, sort of like a low-pressure area. The more massive the matter is, the bigger the hole and the greater the push by space to fill it. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

OK, for now, assume this force is pressing down on me, is there a reaction force in the opposite direction? Space -> Earth <-> You <- Space<br /><br />Space is doing the squeeze play from all directions. You and the Earth, in turn, push against each other. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

You're thinking in terms of everyday experience. You have to go beyond Newton's laws and not be limited by them. Space doesn't need an immovable object like a wall at the edge of the universe to push against. Space itself just pushes. Maybe it's the pressure of the expanding universe or something? Who knows? <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>
